Their two-rather too tanned for late winter according to Earth's timeline- faces finally emerged out of the elevator , each pair of hands bearing KEPLAIDE-1A confidential documents . They were discussing a seemingly important subject , judging from the stress in their looks and anxious faces.
-" They told us the barrier will be activated soon after testing . If everything goes as planned ,we would normally be ahead of schedule. Said the first man to get out of the elevator door .
-"Mhmm..., sighed the second man , apparently lost in his own thoughts. Yeah that's... that's good news.
-Is there something wrong ?
-No not really .
-Yeah Eric , « not really » is not vague at all. The other man said sarcastically. Just spill it out while we're here.
-Well ...I'm not really feeling it .
- Feeling what ?
-Well , all of this. I mean , we spent almost half of our lives in here and we have only been in contact with IASRA's president once. He is suspiciously being very mysterious about this operation as a whole.
They were now walking into what resembled to a spacious dome entirely made of transparent glass. Its dimensions were indeed so uncharacteristically enormous that it could easily contain a whole neighborhood of standard American houses .
-"Take a look over there, said Jacob, pointing above his head.
Through the transparent glass, both men could notice, in complete horror, an almost perfectly round silhouette, glowing red in the darkness of space, among millions of brightly shining stars. The continents that they could easily distinguish not even a day ago were now covered by a gigantic thin opac layer of brown clouds.
-"Wow...that must not be a nice sight for them out there. Eric responded.
-" Well Mr. Hikes warned us in the official IASRA's documents that the changes in earth's climate would happen very fast.
-"And what the hell is this plenty of space is for anyway? Watching our planet collapse from afar like some kind of movie or something?
That plenty of space wasn't, indeed, used for any notable purpose. The room was empty for a reason or another. The only sources of light were from outside as the two men walked towards another door in the other side of the dome.
-"I got a call from the IASRA's head of administration saying that the testing team was already here. I'm guessing this is it then.
This was the moment of truth . They spent over two decades of their lives in here , under the president of the IASRA's order . Let's note , however, that 20 earth years in a place where the perception of time is relatively different , it was more correct to narrow it down to 1 year and a half .
Their bodies grew exactly like they would in 20 years spent on earth , thanks to "Lod2" pills they have been getting from the IASRA's research laboratories.
20 years ago , they could not predict a single thing about what would happen to their bodies and blindly volunteered for the mission in exchange of an exorbitant amount of money. The moon kept on rotating for almost 20 years around their home planet . Now that Earth stopped doing so, the consequences would be disastrous if they don't execute the orders given from above fast and efficiently enough . Fortunately , everything was on-time and they got no delay, as expected from the president of the IASRA who wouldn't let a detail escape from his attention .
-"Let's hope for the best .
They eventually opened the door of the testing room . For the first time in 20 years , they finally entered the room they have been supervising and protecting from outsiders for many years . Hearts were naturally beating in an astonishing high rhythm as the two made their first steps into one of the most kept secret places in humanity's history .
