Chapter 11
Comfort

Mia went as far her legs took her, not caring where she ended up. Soon, she was near a cliff. She sat on the edge and stared blankly at the water.

She didn't even imagine something like this could happen. Under normal circumstances, she would never lose her composure. And would be furious with herself if she did. But at that moment, she just couldn't bring herself to care. To her, it didn't matter. She just didn't care. Everything had changed.

The guy she had loved, the one she had cried over for years. The one who's death resulted in her own death, was alive. And Caius, he was the one person she thought would support her no matter what. And even in the cases where he couldn't understand her situation, he would respect it. That's how it has always been. But no, he didn't. He didn't side with her. Oh no. He sided with the murderer, and not just any murderer. Her murderer. He sided with the woman who had killed her. He defended that woman.

Mia couldn't help but think that James wouldn't have done that. James didn't do that. And even when she left, it was James who called out to her.

She thought that she'll die after James did. But then Caius blew life into her. Caius was her everything. But now that James was here, could Mia actually be with Caius. Mia knew, of course, that she wouldn't leave Caius now. Not after so much, but did he feel the same? Caius was choosing Maria over her. Was he not?

All sorts of questions and thoughts flooded Mia's head. And for once, she was upset, upset that she was a vampire. She knew that if she was human, she would have jumped right off the cliff. But with her being a vampire, it won't really bother her.

Just then, she felt a presence beside her.

"Alec." She said.

"Mia." He replied. "You aren't okay, are you?"

Mia sobbed and shook her head. "I'm just so confused. I don't even understand what happened. Caius...he...and James..." She sobbed.

"It's alright you know, being confused, I mean." Alec told her. "You have a past and so does master Caius. And today, both of you had your pasts right in front of you. You both had different reactions."

"He chose her. Over me." Mia whispered softly.

"No." Alec replied. "He did not, Mims. He defended her. Just this once. Wouldn't it have been your instinct to defend James? He did it before he could think. And you know him, he never contradicts himself. Once the words slipped out, he stuck to them."

"But..I don't know..." She replied still confused.

"Mims, Caius is a jealous man. He got protective when he saw James. And you know, he was with Maria for centuries. Never a relationship with emotions, mind you, it was always intimacy. But still, they became good friends. They stopped a century or so ago. But there are still some instincts and some habits. Even if you don't listen to your favorite song for years, you'll still sing along when you listen to it again. Thats it Mia. Don't upset yourself. Caius will never choose someone over you. And as for James, he would have seen it coming. Or at least imagined it. That you had moved on. For all you knew, he died years ago. It's okay to be a little confused. Master Caius moved away easily. He never had an emotional attachment and him moving away was a matter of his choice. You, on the other hand, had no say in the matter. You had no choice but to move on."

The words did little to make her happy. But she was relieved...a little better than she was before. But still confused...
