Chapter 21
GuiltDeciding that Bella had to be executed as soon as possible, the date was fixed for the coming Friday. The Leaders decided to go along with Mia's idea of a public execution. Nearly everyone was busy planning and preparing.
"It'll be a show of power." Caius had said. "To remind people where defying the Volturi is going to get them." He said.
"They already know." Mia had replied, laughing it off.
"But seem to forget rather quickly and too often for my liking." He had replied as his brothers agreed.
It was on Friday morning that Mia realised how correct those words were. They were having the trials early in the morning to get it out of the way before Bella's execution. When Mia noticed for the first time exactly how many people were guilty, she couldn't help but be shocked.
Not long after the trials, people started arriving.
The Cullens were one of the first ones to arrive.
Mia greeted everyone.
"So...a public execution, eh?" Edward asked.
"I know, it probably makes you uncomfortable. You really don't have to attend." Mia replied, a little guiltily. The Cullens and Bella had been close, she knew that. She couldn't imagine how hard watching Bella's execution would be for Edward. They may say that they were okay and that she didn't matter to them anymore, but Mia knew that it wasn't possible to change your feelings towards someone in a moment.
"No, really. We are fine." Rosalie said.
"If you say so. But just keep in mind, you guys don't have to attend if you don't want to. I cannot force you to watch this." Mia said.
"Of course, we will keep that in mind." Carlisle said.
"Now, do excuse me. I have to attend to a few things." Mia said before leaving.

"Mom. Are you alright?" Mia asked her mother when she saw her standing outside in a balcony."Yes. Yes, dear. Of course." Her mother replied, smiling slightly.
"I find that hard to believe."
Her mother sighed before chuckling. "Call me a fool, but Bella's execution upsets me a little. It's not that I believe she should stay alive, it's just...she's my brothers daughter. I may not know her very well but my brother, I know him. He will never see his daughter again. I don't know how I'd deal with it if I was told I couldn't see you. That was the reason your father and I agreed to this life in a heartbeat." She smiled tightly. "My brother and I are no longer as close as we once were but he's still my brother. I still love him. And I still don't want him hurt."
The smile that was on Mia's face a few minutes back faded.
"Mom, I had no idea. But I tried to give her another chance." Mia said now feeling guilty.
"I know you did. Don't feel guilty. Not even for a second. You did everything you could, but you also have a duty. Do what you have to." She said, hugging Mia briefly and giving her a smile before walking away.
After a couple of minutes, Mia shook her head and decided to go and find Caius.
On her way she bumped into Edward.
"Edward." She greeted.
"Mia." He replied with a slight, crooked smile.
"Are you alright?" Mia asked for the second time that hour.
"I'm okay." He replied.
"You don't look okay. Have you hunted lately?" She asked him.
"Been a while." He admitted.
"Is it because of Bella?" Mia asked hesitantly, not wanting to know the answer.
"I really just thought that after a century of waiting, she was the one." Edward said. "We were together for a couple of years. And...yeah."
"I'm really sorry Edward. I know for a fact that you will find someone. I found Caius. And you really don't have to come and watch Bella's execution, you know." Mia said.
"Yeah, I know. I'm not 100% sure I'll be there." He replied.
"Of course."
"And..um..I should go and find Carlisle. Excuse me." He said.
Mia stopped aside to let him pass. She stared in the direction he went in. At this point, the guilty feeling was growing, she couldn't help but wonder how many people she was hurting with this. She also knew that there was no way of saving Bella now and worst of all, she knew that even if there was, she wouldn't save Bella.
