"Talk." She opened the cookie dough, handed me a spoon, and waited quietly.
"Umm..." I stabbed my spoon into the carton. "Cassie, my ex, we had been dating. A long time. And-"
"How long?"
"Long enough."
"Really, come on."
"Uh... Five? Five years." I looked up and her eyes were huge.
"Woah. Five?" I nodded. "That's a long time. I'm surprised you guys weren't married yet."
A pained expression overtook my face. I took the ring out of my back pocket and threw it in her lap. She picked up the diamond and gold band. She flipped it around a few times before noticing the inscription. Her lips moved along with the words as she read.
"Oh. That's..."
"Ironic? I know."
"I'm sorry, Zayn. I really didn't know-"
"It's fine." I shrugged and stuck the spoon in my mouth.
"How'd you guys break up?" She mumbled through her mouthful.
"I had been avoiding her for the past two weeks, because of the ring, and she didn't hear me out. She ran out on me."
"You didn't go after her?" She was shocked.
"Well, no. I would've any other time, but this time, it's different. It's really over. It feels different." I whispered.
"You guys have broken up a lot?" I nodded. "I'm sorry. That sucks, Zayn." I shrugged. "Okay movie time!"
"Are you kidding me? I'm not watching a chick flick." I rapidly shook my head.
"Calm down, loverboy, I'm putting in Frozen." I made a confused face.
"What is Frozen?" Her jaw dropped to the floor.
"You've never seen Frozen?" I shook my head. "Oh no, this is definitely an emergency now," she stuck her hand out towards me, as if she was telling me you just wait.
She put the movie in and waited until it got to the main menu. She pressed play and walked over to me. She grabbed a blanket on her way over. She sat cross-legged beside me an threw the blanket over both of us.
It was actually a pretty good movie. Reasonable humor (someone has got to tell Olaf he is going to melt during summer), good plot line, and the songs weren't as annoying as all the others from other Disney movies. Payton mouthed all the words to each song, and I could tell she was dying to get up and dance, but she stayed seated right beside me.
We had gotten to the part where Ana was laid out on the couch and she was waiting for Prince Hans to kiss her. Payton turned and looked at me while the two leaned in. I didn't take my eyes off the screen.
"Oh Ana, if only somebody loved you." Hans said and backed away from freezing Ana.
"What the actual fuck just happened here?" I turned to Payton.
"Shhh, listen." She pointed to the screen and I listened intently.
Hans explained that he was pretty much being a sneaky bitch, trying to marry into royalty.
"Oh, that is not okay." I said and pointed at the screen when Hans left the room.
Payton giggled.
A few minutes later, Ana was fighting the storm, trying to get to Kristoff to get her true love's kiss (cliché), when Ana saw Prince Hans trying to kill Elsa. Ana ran and put her body between Hans and Elsa.
By that point, I was pretty pissed of at the directors of this movie. Ana froze.
But it's all okay because Elsa cried on her and unfroze her because Ana and Elsa's love is a different kind of true love.
I slammed my fist down on the couch when it was over.
"What the heck?" I whispered.
Payton laughed at me. "Didn't you love it?" She got up to stop the rolling credits. She stopped in her place when Demi Lovato's voice began. She turned to look at me. "Do. Not. Laugh." She pointed a finger. I put my hands up in surrender and stifled a laugh.
She started dancing around the living room and singing along. Her voice was heard better than Demi's, but I wish I could've heard Demi's instead.
"You cannot sing for your life, Payton." I laughed.
"I said, don't laugh." She resumed dancing. The song became very upbeat and she started swinging her head around.
I watched her hips sway and her arms flail. Her lips released an ear-deafening sound as she used the remote for a mic.
Then song came to an end and she pouted. She made her way across the room to take the disc out and put it back in the box. She set the box down and sauntered back to her place beside me on the couch.
"It's the first day of senior year and I've already had more fun than all of my other years in high school." She whispered against my shoulder.
"Is that a compliment?"
"Yep," she nodded.
"Thank you."
"Thank you."
She eventually fell asleep on my shoulder and I had to leave. I stood up carefully, setting her head down on a pillow. I pulled her legs up onto the couch and fully covered her body with the thin blanket.
I decided she wasn't too comfortable, but I had no idea what to do with her, so I wrote a note on a post-it and stuck it on her head.
Dear Mrs. Greene,
Your daughter fell asleep right here on the couch and I have no idea what to do with her.
She was very nice to me this afternoon, I've been through a tough breakup this weekend and she gave me "emergency medicine."
Please wake her up and send her to her bed.
Zayn
I looked at her one last time before heading out her front door. I shut it carefully behind me and headed across the street to the abandoned sidewalks of our high school. I walked down the concrete pathway until I saw the field with knee-high grass. I passed through it and walked up to my front steps. I took my key out of my back pocket and stuck it in the keyhole. I unlocked the door, stepped inside, and locked the deadbolt behind me. I headed upstairs to my bedroom. I looked for signs of family on my way up, but no one was home yet. Just like always. I flopped down on my bed and closed my eyes. I thought about how much fun I had today. She loosened me up. I forgot all about Cass.
