Zayn

I couldn't begin to comprehend what had happened.

Payton and I were walking home, carelessly, and she had started to ask me something.

But she froze and squinted at my house. Well, not my house, the person outside my house.

And that person had happened to be Cassie.

So, I froze, hoping to protect me from the danger that was ahead. But, once again, Cassie had me in a trance, and within a minute, I was on my way across the road to get to Cassie.

As soon as I was in front of Cassie, she wrapped her skinny, pale arms around me, hugging me close to her. Yet, it didn't feel right. I didn't feel as much comfort and warmth as I used to whenever we would embrace. This caused me to freeze again.

I gently pushed her off of me. She held onto my arms. I stood dormant.

"Zayn," she stated. I nodded. "I missed you, and I've come here to talk to you," she said.

"Uh, okay," I said and scratched my head. "But, Payton's here," I pointed. "So make it quick," I said.

"Well-" she paused. "Why is Payton here?" She spat.

"She's my friend and I quite like her company," I said. But wait, my friend? Payton is so much more than a friend. "I mean, she's more than a friend to me," I blushed.

"Zayn," she cooly states. I snapped my head up to meet her eyes. "What the fuck? You can't just prance around with other girls."

"What? Why not? You and I are not together anymore, I am allowed to like someone else," I said.

"C'mon, Zayn, we just had a little bump in the road. We always fix it," she said.

"You don't get it, Cass. You really hurt me and I can't go through it again. I don't even know what you are doing here, honestly."

"I came here-"

And like that her lips were on mine, tangled between mine, pushing and pulling on mine, yet I didn't respond. It was a bitter kiss. Full of nothing but lust and revenge and jealousy.

"To do that."

And with that she walked away with a smirk on her face. I breathed heavily before turning back around to an empty field.

Payton was gone.

But I wasn't going to let her get away.

So I ran, faster than I ever had before, to her house. I ran through the field, up the winding walkways of the high school, across the street, and past Payton.

Then, I stopped, turned on my heel, and saw her frozen in front of me. I ran to her and she cringed. She shut her eyes and balled her fists. I took her wrists into my hand and started to pry her fingers apart while shushing her.

"Payton," I kissed her on the forehead. She flinched away from me. "Payton, what's wrong?" I whispered.

She stuttered around before finally forming a complete sentence. "You kissed her."

"No, I didn't," I said, remaining calm. I finally got her hands open so that I could slip my fingers through them. I slowly begun to move her toward her house and out of the street.

"Yes, you did," she nodded, keeping her eyes screwed shut.

"No, babe, I didn't. She kissed me, and I didn't kiss back." I kissed her nose. Her eyes became loose, but were still shut. Her fingers started to finally hold into mine.

"You know what else, Pay?" I asked. She shook her head. "I told her off." She opened her eyes. "I told her that I didn't want her there and that it was officially over."

Payton softly smiled at me. I smiled back at her and took her in for a hug.

"You know one more thing?" I asked. She looked up at me. "I told her you were much more than a friend to me," I whispered.

"I am?"

"Of course," I nodded.

She gave me a lopsided smile while tilting her head to the side a bit. A smile that made me like her so much more.

"I really like you, Zayn," she said as her arms wrapped around my waist.

I hugged her back and pressed my lips into her hair. "I really like you, too."
