Vanessa was losing her mind. She crawled into a corner and sunk against the wall. Her breathing was ragged, which caused her to grow increasingly dizzy. She almost felt claustrophobic.
"Why am I like this?" she thought to herself. She curled up into a tight ball. At that moment, she realized why she was panicking. She was alone in her house, which she would be for the next couple of days. Vanessa was scared of being alone. She was alone at the time she was taken, after all.
The doorbell rang repeatedly. The doorknob rattled. Vanessa whimpered and curled up tighter. She heard the back door open.
"Vanessa? Where are you?" Beckett shouted, frantic. For some reason, Vanessa couldn't hear Beckett.
"Vanessa?"
Beckett heard someone sobbing and breathing hard in the distance. He followed the sound of it. Beckett found Vanessa, curled up in a corner.
"Vanessa! What happened? Are you hurt?" Beckett asked, kneeling down and grabbing her shoulders. Vanessa didn't even react. It was as if she didn't see Beckett. She was shaking and her breathing was labored.
"Vanessa?" Beckett called again. He lifted her chin so that they were eye to eye. Vanessa still didn't see Beckett. It was as if she was looking straight through him. He shook Vanessa gently.
"Vanessa, it's Beckett. I'm here. It's okay."
Unexpectedly, Vanessa threw herself into Beckett. Vanessa hugged Beckett, tightly. She leaned against him, completely, so that Beckett was completely supporting her weight.
"It's okay. You're okay." Beckett whispered to her. They stayed like that for a while.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Vanessa said weakly, pulling away. Beckett cupped her face with his hands. He wiped away stray tears with his fingertips.
"Don't be sorry." Beckett said, "Can you tell me what happened? Where's your mom?"
"I realized why I was so scared to go home. It was because I would be home alone. My mom's away on business." Vanessa explained.
"I'll stay with you until your mom comes home." Beckett announced.
"No Beckett, I-"
"I'm not taking no for an answer."
"Thank you." Vanessa said as she grabbed Beckett's hand. She looked into his eyes. Beckett laughed.
"What's so funny?" Vanessa asked.
"Nothing. You're beautiful." Beckett said grinning.
"I'm a mess. Look at me." Vanessa said. How could he think that, with her puffy, red eyes and tear-stained cheeks?
"Hate to break it to you, but you're beautiful." Beckett said, kissing the top of Vanessa's head.
"Why didn't your mom come home to see you?" Beckett was confused. If he had a daughter who was kidnapped, he would do anything to make sure she was okay.
"It's not that she's a bad mom, I love her. Her work is strict, and if she misses it, she could lose her job. Also, all the flights back home are full for the next few days." Vanessa explained. Beckett nodded.
"Speaking of moms, is your mom really okay with you staying with me?" Vanessa asked.
"She's out of town teaching for the next couple of days. She won't mind." Beckett responded. Vanessa smiled.
"Let's watch some TV. It'll take your mind off of things." Beckett said, leading Vanessa to the couch. They sat next to each other. Beckett swung his arm around Vanessa, as she leaned into him.
"Maybe things will be okay, after all." Vanessa thought to herself.
