Turns out, John had a French great grandpa, which means that John had French heritage from his father's side.John's great-grandfather, André Laurens, left France and moved first to England, then New York. It was here where John's grandpa, Jean Samuel Laurens, was born. The Laurenses eventually moved to Charleston in 1715.
Here Jean Samuels chose to Anglicanize his name and he became known as John. Jean (John) Samuel Laurens is John's namesake.
