Okay so, this may surprise you, but John was not a turtle obsessed dork like most people think.
John Laurens loved nature since he was little, so you could say he was a nature loving dork more than a turtle loving dork. He literally only drew Turtles once and he was being paid for it. He was indeed thrilled by the creature (and spent hours watching it), but that's because he was a fan of nature and that turtle was rare in the area he lived in.
Also, don't get traumatized, but John ate a turtle once.
