"A lot of things."
I swallow down the lump of nervousness within my throat, not knowing where to begin, but I don't have to start, for she does it for me.
"Ten years ago, something happened, I had to leave...I'm sorry," she states, tears already welling up in her eyes like puddles of raindrops just ready to form their own lake.
She sits back in her chair, letting out a sigh of bleakness, "I've been preparing for this moment for a decade, knowing that one day you'd come back to me, asking about this such thing. But I find it that I'm still not ready," at her last statement, her crystal-like eyes flicker to mine. My expression stays the same: blank, for I am trying so hard to hold back the pained look.
I've been wanting to ask this question for so long, but...I guess now I realize I'm not ready. Not ready for the answer I might receive.
"Long ago," she starts, breaking the uncomfortable, tense silence between us. "The Alpha of this pack passed, for a reason, I'll get to later. That's why I'm back here, as the Luna and the Alpha."
I stay quiet, though I have questions, a part of me says that she'll explain them. Every single one of them.
"I was born here, Vivian, this is my home, your origins. But I was cast out, for a reason so small, so stupid."
"Why?" I break in, my curiosity getting the better of me.
"My eyes...they're gray, different from everyone else's here. But there was another reason too, one that's too hard to explain...so I must show you."
At this, her pupils dilate, engulfing the entire white space, turning her whole eye black. I feel the air rise, as if I'm afloat, the air warm, and the sudden sound of birds chirping come echoing quietly. Walls of color are painted around me, the office turning into a yard, but not just any yard, the Pack House's backyard.
children's screams and fits of laughter erupt from all around me. Whispers from the parents come blasting through my eardrums as if each individual were talking to me directly. Fireworks of sound explode all around me, everywhere I turn, there's a new voice. Bodies of human and wolf bustle around the yard, the trees stand way above the land.
I'm there, but not, I see things, but no one sees me.
But it's at this moment that a piercing howl of a name erupts from a husky male voice.
"Damaris!"
At the sound of his tone, a little girl comes running from underneath the tree line. Her long, chocolate brown hair bounces as she takes a jaunting step on the grass, repeating this action over, and over, and over. her eyes flicker in my direction but see right through me.
But it is only known that I recognize those eyes.
The eyes of my Mother.
The eyes of Damaris.
What is happening?
