Chapter XXXVII

Ariadne

I sniffled once and shifted, my sore wrists locked in heavy manacles that were attached to the wall. I pulled up my legs underneath me, trying to readjust. My body was still sore from the beating I received not too long ago and sitting on this hard floor for several hours without moving was only making it worse.

My thoughts drifted to Lycus; I wondered if he was looking for me, or if he didn't even know that I was here. I hoped that he knew what had happened to me, but then I thought, why would he? How would he find out? It's not like I could just tell him. And why would he care? It wasn't like we were... friends, or something.

A loud clanking sound in the hallway alerted me to someone approaching. Keys jangled in the door followed by a loud screech as it was pulled open. In the doorway stood a man, tall and dark haired with thick eyebrows and a stern set face. He stood there for several moments before speaking.

"You'll be leaving tomorrow," he stated emotionless.

"Please, I didn't do this," I cried, stretching my chained hands toward him in a plea.

"I'm sorry." He turned to go, but hesitated in the doorway. A second or two ticked by, then he continued on and closed the door, locking it behind him.

"Wait!" I yelled after him, crawling towards the door. I sunk to my knees and lowered my head, defeated. When had I sunk this low? What had happened to make me, a princess, crawl and beg?

A sob escaped my throat. Then another. I held it back as long as I could until it burst forth. I sobbed, harder than I ever had before. I was going to die. I would never be able to save my mother or even see her again. So I let the tears flow, for it helped with the pain, the overwhelming pain that consumed me.

So... really sad chapter. But still an update, right? Let us know what you think! :)
