Chapter forty

It seemed like these days one punch hit me after another. First he was missing, then he had PTSD, then he sold drugs, then he was a killer, then we found him, then he hated me, and now, he confessed to the murders. Murders. He killed several people, according to the police, and now, according to himself. I didn't know how much more I could take, but I was done being punched at. I needed to talk to the only person who knew all the answers, and at this point I didn't care if he played me or not. I needed to know the truth, needed to know how far I was in this mess, so maybe I could swim to the surface and get out of this. Who I took with me, I had no idea, and it would depend on one person and one person only. Niall.

Wells looked at us, and I was surprisingly the first one to speak up. I was done being numb, not that I chose to be, but my willpower was stronger this time.

"Can I see him?" I asked quickly. Wells looked at me, surprised also written on his face. Probably because minutes ago he heard me tell Niall hated me, but I needed answers. This was driving me insane, and I didn't like to be messed with. I still didn't know if what Niall said to me this morning was true or not, I had no idea why he confessed, but I still wanted to help him.

"I'll ask the chief. Please stay here, I still need your testimony, Louis." He said, and walked out of the room to ask his boss. I looked at the boys. Liam looked at me and held Zayn's hand, Zayn looked worried and Louis looked less nervous than before. Maybe he realized now that he wasn't in trouble or something. Wells came back after minutes of silence.

"You can talk to him, only one of you at the time, and I'll be in the same room." He told us. I nodded my head frantically, as long as I could talk to him.

"That's fine. Can I go first?" I turned my head to look at Zayn, as he was the only one who wanted to talk to him too, and he nodded his head. I gave him a reassuring squeeze in his shoulder and stood up.

"Another detective will take your testimony, Louis, please stay here and I'll pick you up when he's ready to talk." He addressed the last part to Zayn, who gave me a soft smile and nodded at Wells. My nerves were kicking in as I followed Wells through the hallway, my hands were sweaty and my stomach contained a whole zoo. Currently, elephants were kicking at my organs and I had the strong feeling of throwing up. Wells took a turn to the left, and the rooms seemed a bit smaller here, but it weren't jails. Wells opened a door and there he was, handcuffed at the table, looking at his lap, but looking as calm as ever. My breath hitched as I saw him, because even though he didn't love me anymore, to me he was still the most important person in my life and it tugged at my heart to see him sitting here so helpless and small. He didn't look up when Wells cleared his throat. He took a seat in the left corner and motioned at me to come into the room. I had no idea I was still standing on the doorstep. I took a deep breath and walked over to the table. I grabbed the chair across from him and hesitantly sat down. Once he heard it, he looked up and his eyes were screaming guilt, love, sadness and disappointment.

"I did it for you." He mumbled. Out of all the things he could say, I never guessed this and it wasn't like I understood him either. I felt Wells' eyes burning in my back, but I tried to ignore him. I looked at Niall questionably, but all he did was lift his captured hands and sat them on the table. I wanted to grab them, but didn't know if it was allowed, and more importantly - well at least for me - I didn't know if Niall wanted me to.

"What do you mean?" I croaked out. My voice still wasn't the same, due to all the crying and the shock and the nerves.

"I didn't mean what I said this morning, Harry, you have to believe me. Please believe me, please, Harry, I don't know what I would do if you didn't believe, I just need you to believe me, please, I-" I cut him off by grabbing his hands and hold them tight.
