The attack ~1~

I ran down the halls of the castle I lived in, looking for my friend.

I spotted the boy with blond hair and smiled at him as I approached and he smiled back.

Garroth was my only friend other than the maids. We only saw each other once in awhile, and so days he came were my favourites.

It's nice to be able to get away from all the stress even for just a bit.

"How's it all?" I asked him and he groaned.

"Oh you don't even understand. My dad's pressuring me about me being king more every day I get closer to being 18. I guess my freedom is gone in a few more months." He said with a sigh.

I nodded in agreement. Garroth was the heir of the kingdom of O'khasis and he was to be king on his 18th birthday.

And I was to be queen of Phoenix Drop when I was 19. For some reason my parents decided that I should be queen instead of Kacey when I was born because I was older, and they thought it'd be a nice change.

I don't know. All I know is that I hate it. At least they're giving me one more year than Garroth.

I sometimes envy my brother for that. He gets to be free! He has no pressure and he doesn't have to take as much lessons as me.

But I guess life is never fair. Is it?

I want to explore the world. I haven't been out of this castle in so long! Even if I have, I've actually never been out of Phoenix Drop.

I want to be free and explore.

I take so many lessons, but the only lesson I love is fighting lessons. My father allowed me to take fighting lessons after so much of my begging.

Trust me, it's a great stress relief.

"I hope we can still see each other after that." I said and he nodded with a smile.

"Hey..." he said a smile creeping up on his face. "Wanna... sneak out?"

I grinned. "Now?"

Garroth nodded. "How about Kacey?"

"I think he won't come because he's usually more about following rules. He's such a bore!" I said and he laughed.

"Just let him know we'd be gone for a bit." He said and I nodded in understanding.

"I'll see you at my room in 5?" I asked him and he nodded.

After telling Kacey we were going to go somewhere and that we'd be back, I headed to my room and greeted Garroth who was there.

"We've got to do this quietly." I said in a whisper as he nodded eyeing the door probably to see if any maids were going to come.

"Quit staring at the door come on! It makes it seem like you have a crush on it or something!" I quietly exclaimed as he laughed and threw the rope out the window.

I went down first as Garroth held the rope for me. Garroth came down after me.

He handed me a light blue cloak as he put on a dark blue one himself. If not, everyone would recognize us.

I was glad I was allowed to wear summer dresses, because if not I would've called so much attention.

Garroth and I somehow sneak past the guards and maid in to the streets of Phoenix Drop.

"That was very successful for our first time!" I exclaimed and he nodded.

"If we get back without being caught, we should do this more often."

Phoenix Drop was full of excitement and it was always very cheerful. There were often festivals, and even if not, it seemed pretty festive.

We walked through the streets and just did whatever we wanted for hours. It was pretty fun.

Garroth and I were sitting on a hill eating fruits that we bought, when suddenly the atmosphere around us seemed to change.

All the cheerfulness and festivity was gone. It was replaced with screams and alarmed yells.

Garroth and I looked at each other and immediately stood up to see what it was.

From the hill I could see it pretty clearly. There was some smoke rising from the castle.

Fire.

The castle was under attack.

I looked at Garroth with panick in my eyes as he looked back at me with a similar expression.

"Mom! Dad! Kacey!" I yelled as I ran towards the castle not caring if my hood had blown off my head and my face was showing.

I ran through the crowd of worried people and pushed through.

I soaked my cloak in water and I ran into the castle before Garroth could say anything.

"Kacey? Mom? Dad?" I yelled covering my nose and mouth with my now bunched up wet cloak.

I ran to Kacey's room to see him in there.

"Where's mom and dad?" I asked him not caring whether or not I was speaking elegantly right now.

"I don't know!" He said tears in the corner of his eye.

I ripped my cloak and handed Kacey half of it.

He held it to his face and I held my stumbling brother as we walked.

I needed to get him out first before looking for my parents. More smoke, and he'll pass out.

As we were walking Kacey tripped. I fell along with him and felt something wet under me.

I held up my hands to see something wet on them.

I looked down, horrified at what I saw.

My parents lifeless body was there, a pool of blood surrounding them. They had been murdered in this attack.

I almost lost it, but I held my hand over Kacey's eyes, not wanting him to see it.

"What is it?" He asked me and I shushed him.

"W-We have to hurry. Come on." I said my voice wavering slightly from the tears bubbling up my throat.

I couldn't lose it now. If I did, Kacey will have to see it too, and I didn't want that happening. I had to stay strong for his sake, and my own as well.

Tears formed in my eyes and my vision blurred. My throat hurt from trying to prevent the sob from coming out. I began to shake but I didn't dare let Kacey see what was in front of us.

Kacey and I kept walking as a figure appeared. I could barely see them due to my blurry vision.

I could just vaguely make them out as they came up to me. I took a step back but they knocked Kacey unconscious, and grabbed him as I screamed.

"Give him back!" I yelled as I attacked the figure, but they dodged my attack, and they ran, taking Kacey away with them.

I sobbed and screamed not able to take it anymore. They were going to kill Kacey just as they killed my parents.

I lost them! I failed them! How was I going to ever be a good leader anyways, if I couldn't even save the ones closest to me.

And it won't just be my family. The maids butlers and guards. I'm sure they won't just attack the ones in the castle. They will attack the whole kingdom.

And I couldn't stop them, or save a single person.

It's because I was weak. I let my guard down. I will never be a leader.

I lost it and I was crying uncontrollably. Who wouldn't when they just lost their family in front of their eyes?

The fire was spreading rapidly. I don't know how long I cried, and I don't know how long it took until I blacked out.
