--Ren's POV--
I ducked into the alleyway next to the Orphanage to the small window just above the trash cans. Smearing away the caked up dirt I looked into the main foyer of the orphanage, it was almost as if nothing had changed since my time there.
The floors were old and filthy caked in dirt, food and satan knows what else lurked in there. The long lines of wooden tables were still in place with wooden benches tucked underneath and a fireplace on the far side with a few old ratty looking couches around it that looked like they were riddled with disease.
Yet, there was not a child in sight. For an orphanage that usually housed over twenty orphans there was not a soul inside, The Orphanage Advisor who ran the orphanage appeared from down a set of stairs that was expertly hidden behind the bookcase and approached the Head Councillor.
I couldn't hear their words exactly but the Councillor began to follow the Advisor down the stairwell as the bookcase slid shut behind them, I stomped my foot in frustration and scanned the alleyway for an alternate route.
A ventilation grate was ground level at the end of alleyway which I assumed could be the way for stale air to leave a potential basement underneath, I dug through my pockets for my pocket knife and unfolded the extra tools until I found the small screwdriver.
I quietly thanked my late father for this gift and worked on unscrewing the screws holding the grate shut, I was grateful for my small stature as anyone of normal size could not possible fit through.
Yanking the grate away from the opening and tossing it to the ground I got down on my stomach and crawled into the air vent, I stiffled a cough trying not to choke on the years of dust and probably rat poison or something that was hiding in here.
I could hear muffled voices nearby and I tucked my hand into my pocket for my phone to switch on the flash light, illuminating the vent made my chest tighten in anxiety and a sense of claustrophobia started to seep into my veins but I continued crawling deeper into the network of vents trying to get closer to the voices.
I spotted a few lines of light shining up into the vent from what looked like another opening, and just my luck it was directly above the two men in what looked like some sick S&M dungeon, I quietly gave the grate a tug and it came loose as the screws had rusted away and sat it aside.
I switched my phone to the video camera app and held it up to the two men
"Did the virus work?" Jacque demanded impatiently crossing his arms tightly.
"Y-Yes but this is unethical, They're children! What could you possibly need them for?"
"I'm building an army, stronger than any of those pathetic demonoid mercenaries." He spat tapping his foot impatiently.
"B-But King Lucien and Lord Emmett will be furious! I'll be imprisoned or worse executed!"
"Those two pathetic weaklings won't be able to do shit. Show me the children now or I will cut you down right now" Jacque demanded shoving the advisor, the shaking man stagger over to the other side of the room and I crawled across to the other side of the vent to get a better look.
My heart stopped dead in my chest at the rows of still lifeless children piled together on the stone floor, their skin was a waxy grey colour and some were covered in a black liquid staining their clothes. Their eyes were cloudy and dead once full of life.
I covered my mouth with a hand to avoid making a sound and trained the camera on the children.
"The Nether Virus did its job splendidly" Jacque nudged one of the lifeless boys with his foot "I'll be back to collect them tomorrow" He nodded turning on his heel and trudging back up the stairs with the advisor trailing behind
