Keith's mind flashed images of the big fight from the week before, images from lunch when he lashed out on Lance, the glares in class throughout the week, the occasional hand scratching that occurred during detention. He remembered the bitterness he felt finding out the latter had blocked him when he was about to text him and apologize for his outburst. He remembered this morning : the words, the cold stares, the heartache. He remembered the look on Lance's face as he used his own words against him.
He remembered it all, all at once." I wish I could drop out." He told Shiro, a watery substance escaping his eyes.
The older guy's face was quick to show anger. He now stood straight, looking down at the boy with authority.
" No, it's not like you to talk this way. Whatever you're feeling, whatever you're going through, it's temporary. Everything in high school is temporary, the issues you have now will seem trivial in a couple of years."
He stood facing Keith and put a hand on his shoulder as the latter wiped his stray tears, embarrassed.
" I know you're strong, and I know you can handle what life throws at you on your own, you've had plenty of practice."
Now Shiro knelt down to meet his gaze.
" But for the love of God, you're not alone anymore. I insist you come to me for whatever reason, don't keep it bottled inside. You're like my little brother, you are my family. I need to know what's got you in this state."
Without realizing it, the ghost of a smile appeared on Keith's face. Relief washed over him as he wrapped his arms around the bulky guy's neck. Resting his chin on his shoulder, he was engulfed in a much needed fatherly hug.
" Thank you, Shiro. I know you're always there for me, but I got this." Keith assured him.
" Really, I'll find a way to deal with this." He repeated, more to himself than anything.
Leaving Shiro's office and stepping into the empty halls, Keith took a deep breath, ready to take a step back-metaphorically speaking- and deal with his problems.
Seconds after, three bodies on the floor almost startled him out of his white skin. He looked down at the three individuals he despised, laying on the marble floor like homeless people with their backpacks thrown near them.
Upon seeing him, Lance shot up with a face dripping worry. Pidge was next, standing with an awkward smile. Hunk stood slowly, as guilty as a puppy murderer. He had his hands behind his back and his gaze on the ground.
None of the three idiots, as Keith liked to call them in his head, spoke to him so he took the chance to walk away.
" Keith," Lance called out, catching up to him.
" Mmm..." was the weird sound that came from the shorter boy.
" Uh.. You okay, buddy?"
Keith's instincts kicked in. I'm not your buddy, he wanted to say. However, he composed himself and met Lance's eyes briefly.
" I'm fine, thanks." He kept walking, though.
" You sure?" Lance held his shoulder, making him turn. Staring at the three people in front of him, Keith frowned.
" What were you guys doing out there, anyway? You missed class to sleep on the floor." He shook his head, wanting to walk away.
" We were kinda... worried." Pidge said, holding her hands together.
" Yeah, and we felt guilty..." Hunk admitted, sounding like he was on the verge of tearing up. The dude was always a softie.
Keith wanted to smile, but his thoughts of revenge kept coming up. He stood, conflicted, staring at their sorry faces.
" I don't," Lance stated as he crossed his arms, " I'm just here because my best friends are."
He received glares from his left and right, but a smirk from the boy in front of him.
" Well, you didn't need to be waiting on the floor like the hobos you are." Keith chuckled, turning around and heading to class.
" Did he just..?" Pidge asked, almost offended.
" I think he did." Hunk replied numbly, or maybe half astonished at Keith's lack of reaction.
" I told you, the guy only cares abo-" Lance started in a bored tone, but was interrupted by a distant familiar voice.
" You guys coming??"
