I almost lost my nerve as I drove up the long windy driveway. It had been almost three years since I last saw Jason. But that's my fault not his. If I hadn't left everything would have been fine. But I did, just not by my choice.
I looked into the backseat and saw my baby girl- Cassidy- sleeping soundly. I pulled to a stop in front of Jason's brick house and slowly climbed out of the car. I pulled Cassidy from her car seat and turned toward his house.
Jason was now standing there staring at me with a look of disgust on his face. Now I'm not going to lie I do look like shit. But then again cancer treatment will do that to a person. But his look went beyond that.
I watched as his gaze dipped lower and I saw the surprise on his face once he saw Cassidy sleeping in my arms.
"Grace. Why are you here? Why did you leave? And what is that?" Jason asked in an icy tone pointing at Cassidy.
"Jason. I know that we have our differences but you are being not just mean but very rude. But I figure you know that already." I said shifting Cassidy to my other arm.
"Well Grace. If you hadn't just packed up your things and left three years ago with not even a good bye. Maybe. Maybe. I would treat you nicely." Jason said obviously pissed at me.
I stared at him openly as his sister stepped up behind him. "Grace!" Alice screamed running to me. "And who is this precious little thing?" Alice crooned taking Cassidy from my numbing arms.
"This is Cassidy. She is my daughter." I said swallowing my pride. I heard Jason cough, I looked up and met his gaze. The question was clear in his eyes and I answered it with a nod.
"How old is she?" Alice asked completely oblivious to the tension between Jason and I.
"Two years, four months, thirty days, five hours, and two minutes." I answered quickly doing the math. I received two blank stairs. "Sorry. I have to do something with my free time." I said then realized that I had said to much and clamped my jaw shut.
Jason walked to Alice and held out his arms for Cassidy. Just as Alice placed Cassidy in his arms she woke up. She blinked up at him and then looked around until she spotted me. She smacked Jason on the neck.
"Mama. Now. Please? Daddy?" She asked looking at me causing me to grin at her.
He walked over to me and placed her back in my arms. "You told her?" Jason asked.
"Of course I did. I told her as soon as she wanted to know. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. She wanted to know two months ago." I answered hugging her to my chest.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asked me looking at me with those beautiful brown eyes.
"I couldn't. I just couldn't." I said fear causing my eyes to widen. "Jason I need you to take-" I started but got interrupted.
"Hey! What is going on!? Why did Cassidy just call my brother Daddy?" Alice asked and I glanced quickly at Jason and Alice saw it. "Oh my god! Grace! When didn't you tell me!!?" She shouted at me.
Suddenly I felt woozy. I glanced at my watch. It had been twelve hours since my last treatment. I pushed Cassidy into Alice's arms and grabbed my car for support.
"Mama!!" Cassidy shouted reaching for me.
"No, Cass. I'm fine. I wouldn't lie." I lied waving her off. Yes I would. I just don't want you to worry, I thought to myself.
"Mama. Your treatment is kicking in isn't it?" Cassidy asked once again reaching for me. It is but I can't do this right now, I thought looking away from her.
"Cass! I said I was fine!" I shouted, feeling bad for lying right to her face, and took a step back. I slipped when the dizziness took over. I saw the black spots and felt the weight on my shoulders then I gave up and I felt a strong arm catch me around my waist right before my eyes rolled back in my head.
