Three long hours later
"Daddy?" Cassidy said waking me up. "Are Mommy and Grammy going to be okay?" She asked looking up at me with wide eyes.
"I hope so Cass. I sure do hope so." I said looking around the empty room. "Where is everyone?" I ask looking back down at Cass.
"They went to the cafeteria for dinner. They told me not to wake you up. But I didn't did I?" Cassidy asked wide eyed.
"No." I lied to her and a couple minutes later Cassidy fell asleep and the doctor came out of the operating room.
"Mr. Holden. I have good news. Both Grace and her mother both made it through the surgery. Mrs. Pendley will be discharged in the morning. But Grace has a long way to go. She still has cancer in her kidney and liver. She'll undergo both chemo and radiation spread out over a couple of months. She should be fine." Dr. O'mally said smiling at Cass.
"May I see her?" I asked and he nodded as he pushed the door open. I walked in and say next to Grace. "Hey Mrs. Pendley. How do you feel?" I ask turning in my chair to face her.
"I feel fine Jason. Thanks for asking. Is she awake yet?" Carol asked as I turned back around.
"No. It could be another hour or two. The doctor is sure that he can cure her." I replied and a couple minutes later I heard her soft snore. "Grace please wake up." I say as her yes flutter open and I could hear the doctor talking outside.
"Jason? Where am I? Is everybody okay? Am I okay?" Grace asked worriedly.
"Grace you're at he hospital. Both you and Carol had surgery. You still have cancer in your kidney and liver. But Dr. O'mally thinks that he can cure you." I say helping her sit up and handing Cass to her.
"I hope he can. I don't want to die." Grace said tears pooling in her eyes.
"Grace don't cry. I have something very important to ask you." I said reaching into my pocket.
"What is it?" Grace asked as her eyebrows pulled down the way the do when she gets confused.
"Grace I love you. I have for four years. I just didn't know how to tell you. When you left you took my heart with you but that didn't change anything. I want you and Cass to come live with me. Grace will you marry me?" I asked pulling the diamond ring out of my pocket. She didn't even look at the ring she just leaned over and kissed me. Short and sweet just like her. "Is that a yes?" I ask slipping the ring on her finger.
"That would be a safe bet." She said pressing her lips to mine for three seconds before pulling away. "I love you too. By the way we have a very openly staring audience." She whispered with a smile.
"Well Grace I'm going to go get some dinner for me and Cass. I'll be back in a couple of minutes. And you people can stop staring at me I know you are there." I said smiling at Grace.
"Sorry. We are just shocked. I guess. I never even thought that you would want to marry Grace. But you have my blessing." David said sounding calm.
"Jason why are there so many voices?" Carol asked from her bed with her eyes closed.
"Carol. Everyone came to see you. Mom's here to. In fact she's sitting next to you." I reply giving mom a small smile as she sank into the chair next to Carol.
"Charlotte?" Carol asked never opening her eyes.
"Yes. I'm here. I always will be." Charlotte said reaching over and grasping Carol's hand. I smiled as I pressed a kiss on Grace's forehead before standing and walking out of the room for food.
