Chapter Two

Abby raised her head from her daughter's hand as she heard the wooden door open. She glanced over at Bellamy, but he didn't move a muscle.

His hands wrapped around Clarke's, his tux disheveled, his brown eyes rimmed with red from all the tears he had shed. She was surprised he still had hair on his head after the surgery. The two of them had waited, pacing and stressing for hours and hours while her daughter lay helpless and broken on a cold, sterile table.

"Miss Griffin," the nurse nodded, her red hair in a bun. She worked around Bellamy to check and record all of Clarke's vitals.

"Abby?" Abby turned her head to see Marcus Kane, a sad look on his face.

"What is it?" She gulped.

"Well, the good news is that all of her injuries were repaired. Her right arm was broken, two ribs on the left side, most likely from her door. Her clavicle needed two screws, and the stitches across her abdomen went smoothly. All bleeders were found and stopped, and her labs looked good earlier," he informed her, gently.

"What's the bad news?" Abby asked.

"We aren't calling it bad news. It's only been a day since we finished the surgery, Abby. But, we are hoping she wakes soon. She suffered major trauma to her head in the accident."

"She'll wake up." Bellamy's first words in hours, his voice was raw and raspy. He never turned her eyes from Clarke, but at least he spoke.

"Of course she will," Marcus spoke. "Let us know immediately," he said, leaving the room. Once again, it was just Bellamy, Abby, and Clarke. And the nonstop sound of the machines.

Working in a hospital, you would think she was used to those sounds. But, no. Watching machines read and work her daughter's body for her was tearing a new pain into Abby that she wasn't aware she could feel. The world had stopped when Jake had been killed. Her heart had been shredded. But, she still had Clarke. Now, Clarke was lying, helpless and unconscious, and Abby felt her heart ripping in her chest once more.
