"We're sorry," Doctor Kane sighed. "It's been two months now, and we can't give you an explanation. She just hasn't woken up. She may not wake up."
Bellamy felt the small amount of air he had in his lungs, leave him. He felt like an elephant was sitting on his chest.
"I know that she is only eighteen, and there is time. But, it's at this time that we urge families to make sure they understand what can happen from here on out. It's time to start thinking how long you would like her to be supported here."
"What?!" Bellamy demanded. "Are you saying how long we should keep her vitals checked? Keep her fed and shit?"
"Bellamy." He felt Abby's grip on his arm. "He is doing his job. The law states that he has to have this talk," she swallowed, thickly.
"She's going to wake up! She's going to heal and she's going to come back to me! To us," he corrected. "She's not coming off of those machines until she's ready."
"Mr. Blake, I was not insisting that we remove her at all. Her body is functioning, just not her brain. She's not responding to you, so in these cases we have to recommend a care facility as an option."
Bellamy rolled his eyes at the doctor. "She's breathing on her own because she is going to be okay. She just needed to heal her brain. But she can hear me! I know she can."
"There are several studies that support that claim," Kane nodded. "Again, I'm not saying that we change care for Clarke. I'm just doing my job."
Bellamy nodded, turning back to the bed. His heart lurched once again at Clarke. She was still motionless, her pale body not moved since the nurses had come to move her limbs for her.
He felt like crying again. Every time he saw her. And, as much as he hated it, there was that one small black spot in his mind. The spot of 'what if?' What if she didn't wake up? What would he do?
