Chapter Sixty-Four // {jordan's pov}

› {the beginning of the apocalypse}

I steadily raised my bronze desert eagle at the woman. Her skin was a sickly grey and her once green eyes were glazed over. Her blonde hair still flowed nicely like it had when she was alive. She straggled towards me. Blood oozed out of a wound on her left thigh -- I assumed it was where she was bit. The woman had turned in a matter of minutes.

I pulled the trigger.

The woman fell to the floor in a heap in the middle of the intersection. A loud uproar went off from the protesters behind the barricade on Mitchell Street SW. All I could hear was screaming and yelling. They were yelling at me for 'killing an innocent woman.' I holstered my weapon, after turning the safety back on.

I walked back over to another officer, Amanda Shepherd. She was leaning against a car. She refused to shoot them. She didn't agree with what was happening, but she stayed to keep the protesters inline. She wanted us to capture the people and try find a cure to save them. Fantasy. As I neared her, flashes from cameras started going off. They were taking photos of me for the news.

I could already imagine what my mother would say about the headline.

"This is wrong," Shepherd spoke, shaking her head as I neared her. I rolled my eyes.

"They're dead and you'll be too if you don't kill them," I replied harshly, glaring at her. She immediately stood up taller, no longer leaning on the car. I was someone who she looked up to, she often told me that she admired me. I never understood why.

"Yes, ma'am," she replied, no longer looking afraid.

My radio suddenly went off, "half a dozen dead ones are heading towards Mitchell and Washington, I repeat, half a dozen dead ones are heading towards Mitchell and Washington."

I sideways glanced at Amanda, giving her a reassuring look.

I then immediately pulled out my desert eagle, I flicked the safety off and ensured it was loaded. I didn't have much ammo left. Shepherd cautiously followed up behind, flicking the safety off her own gun -- a beretta 92FS.

The 6 or 7 dead ones approached, staggering and limping towards us. I took a deep breath and took aim at the closest one. A male, mid-30s, dark scruffy hair. I pulled the trigger. Dead. A gunshot went off beside me, Shepherd missed and tried again, hitting the dead one in the head, silencing it. I heard her gulp loudly.

I took aim again and shot another one. Take aim and pull the trigger, I'd chant in my head. I never missed.

Once they were all down, I turned to Shepherd, giving her a stern nod. She let out a shaky breath and looked towards the ground. I glanced over to the crowd, noticing they were getting rowdier. I fast walked over to them, they seemed to get angrier. A man suddenly broke free, sending everyone into chaos. People were now jumping the barricade. The man attempted to punch me in the face, I blocked him and took out his legs, letting him fall heavily to the concrete below.

This wasn't the time to arrest people. I took my chance and ran to the nearest building. My phone started vibrating in my pocket. I swung open the door and slammed it behind me. I leaned on the door, breathing heavily. All I could hear was screaming from the other side. I pulled out my phone, seeing it was Hudson calling me. I suddenly felt sick to my stomach.

I was so caught up with my work, I forgot to see if he was okay... I answered the call, raising my phone to my ear.

"Hudson!? Are you okay? Where are you?" I spoke with a rushed tone of voice.

Hudson groaned over the phone, "uh... I'm at yo-.. your apartment, Jords."

"Are you okay?" I repeated, I closed my eyes to avoid the tears from falling. I already knew the answer. I already knew...

"...No."

"Wait for me, Hudson! Please... Wait for me..." I begged and hung up. I shoved my phone back into my pocket, I went to step forward, but I suddenly felt uneasy. I grabbed at the wall to catch myself. My eye caught a knife lying on a table in the room. I immediately stumbled over and grabbed it. I quickly holstered the new weapon. I left the building and into the chaos, trying to get home as fast as I could.
