Chapter 5
It was.........definitely NOT what I expected. I was speechless and NOT in a good way. The house was old and yard was overgrown. The trees were so big it looked like they were the beanstalk for Jack. I swear they could fall and crush the house. It was so tiny. And I, I, I saw rust! It's supposed to be Vi'naere Gates. GATES! GATED COMMUNITY! HELLO? Am I the only one who feels mislead and disappointed? I mean wouldn't you. I didn't want a mansion, just a 2-story or like a quaint luxury condo. But not this. I must have said that out loud because Ms. Fortuneteller lady said,
"Haha, welcome to Vi'naere where Freemont gets even free er!" startled, I looked at her, didn't have a response for that one. Yes I did! "Now, I know how...." I stopped myself just in time, before I said now I know how cheap fortunetellers could affford to live here but she interrupted my thought with,
"How what? How I could ever live here?" I was shocked. It's like she read my thoughts.
"Did I tell you I was physic?" she said and smiled as I just fished the key out my purse as I walked to the porch in awkward silence.
"Oh!" I croacked. I almost fell. One of the three little old wooden steps were broken. It was wobbling frantically and was very soon to fall off. I wonder if I could get Ms. Fortuneteller to get her son, what's his name? Kyle, to fix it. God, this house is awful...Why is she still standing out there in heat of the day? And why was she starring at me?
(clearing throat loudly) "Are you gonna invite me in? Or just stand there?"
"Oh," I didn't know there was a need for an invititation in this case but....It's nice she's being so...I guess, even if she's odd, "Umm, come in. And...have a seat?" I said awkwardly first, then questionably.
"Thank-you." she said subtly.
"Hmm." I walked through the mini foyer, into a nice sized room (surprisingly, actually) that was connected to my new kitchen and even held a small fireplace. I might could get used to this. But, then again, maybe not,
"Umm, what's that smell?!?" I said smelling something like suffocated and stifling, like old smoke.
"Smoke. From the fireplace, probbaly." she said suggestively.
"Hmm...No," I said slowly, "I recognize that stench. It's old cigarette smoke."
"Oh yeah."
"Yes, I remember it clearly. My momma used to be a boneafide smoker with about three packs a day, but that was before she got all oh-so-holy. Ever since, she used to swear it was the mark of Lucifer. And after much cussing and relapses, and praying and drinking, she quit smoking. Clean ever since." Clean of smoking. Now drinking? That was a whole other story. The communion wine wasn't the only alcohol she got a hold to.
"Oh, you speak in past tense so I take it your mother has past?" Haha, I wish God was that good.
I smiled wide.
"Oh no, she's very very alive." I paused then added, "But on a lighter (or depending on how you look at it) a somewhat darker note, we have an estranged relationship."
"Oh, how sad." Not really, but I decided to keep that to myself. I had said enough. And I had seen enough of this house. I was gonna do some major upgrading soon. I was looking though the cupboards to see if any groceries had been left behind. Not much but some instant coffee was left so I offered it and she accepted it. But then I realized that was stupid because I didn't have a coffee machine or any cookware. I explained my dilemma and she said it's fine. Then, I offered her a tip for helping me,
