The darkness pushes in
It tries to drown you
But you already can't breathe
You end up on the hallway floor
In complete hysterics
As everything suddenly becomes
Completely overwhelming
You're suffocating on your panic
Because every thought
Gets lodged in your throat
There can't be enough air
To claw through the panic
And reach your lungs again
Fear clutches at your heart
And pain drains from your eyes
You've lost control
Of the thin stability you had
Somebody appears
But you don't want a witness
You can't have help
They can't see you being weak
You can't say what's wrong
Because it isn't one thing
It's been building for a while
Only one thing pierced the dam
The darkness starts to disappear
And you wish you could go with it
To avoid the aftermath
Of something out of your control
Like panicking in the hallway
Because you couldn't get away
In time to be alone
So you can deal with the fear
That is still clawing at your lungs
It has a vice around your throat
And a noose around your mind
To keep you tethered
And responsive to its will
And you live your life
Trying to just get by
But you can't
Because the world is too much
Too much of everything
And it doesn't understand
The toll the panic takes on you
Because we don't even understand it ourselves
