Chapter Song: On the Loose - Niall Horan

By Friday morning everything that had happened the evening before seemed to be forgotten--including my dis-invitation I had spat out in the heat of the moment. Or at least everything was good between Kat and I.

We made some kind of unspoken agreement that we wouldn't talk about the incident and we've made it a point that nothing had happened by acting like we usually do.

"I am so ready for tomorrow morning. I've already packed and I'm picking up the rental car after school, do you want to come with?" Kat and I were currently sitting opposite each other, talking mindlessly about any and everything.

Study hall's have always been my favorite--I'm sure you understand why.

Leaning back in her seat, Kat twirls a piece of her brown locks between her fingers while her other hand taps repeatedly on the desk in front of her. "Sure yeah, I can meet you at your house around 4:30. I um--have some things to do first."

I lean forward, resting my elbows on the cool surface before resting my chin on my interlocked fingers. "Kat, don't do that."

"Do what?" She nervously asks, her tapping becoming quicker.

"It's okay if you're going to see him, I don't mind and quite frankly, it's none of my business." Sighing heavily I make sure to keep eye contact with my best friend.

"I'm gonna have to figure out a way to behave myself around him. He's your boyfriend and I have to accept that. Mine and his past is between us and I'm not about to ruin this trip by being mad all the time. What good will that do?" I mindlessly start to twist the ring around my right middle finger.

Kat gawks at me like she can't believe a word I'm saying. I'm right there with her, honestly.

"Y-yeah. What good will that do," she repeats, biting her lower lip softly.

Rolling my eyes, I stop fiddling with the piece of jewelry around my finger. "Alright, enough about that. Let's talk m--" I abruptly stop mid-sentence when a pair of soft hands come around to close my eyes from behind.

"Guess who?"

Holding back a smile, I pull their hands away from my face before turning to look at them. "Just to let you know, if anyone else would have even attempted to do that, they would have walked out of the door with a pair of supple hands."

Nicholas rolls his eyes dramatically before pulling the chair out beside me. "There you go again using those big words. Who would have thought your vocabulary would be so...substantial."

I playfully slap his shoulder, jutting my lower lip out. "You think so low of me, Nic." Placing a hand over my heart, I look up into his eyes. "I'm physically hurt!"

Nic's deep laugh sends yet another unknown emotion to spread through my body.

Leaning closer to me, he places a quick kiss on the tip of my nose. "I'd never think that about you, love."

I smile widely, content with his answer.

A loud clearing of a throat made me snap out of it.

"I can leave you two alone, but lord knows what you frisky kids will attempt in a room full of other people."

I laughed under my breath, shaking off Kat's playful banter.

Nicholas must have not thought Kat's joke was funny because when I looked at him, his normally tan skin was three shades lighter, leaving him looking like he's just seen a ghost.

I offer his hand a reassuring squeeze under the table, trying to reduce his embarrassment.

What an innocent soul, this boy.

A few minutes later, Nicholas is back to his normal self, now going on about what his plans are for his time spent in New York.

He's decided that he will spend a week there then take a flight back home to catch up on whatever the hell he's going to miss.

I was satisfied with the fact that he even agreed, it didn't matter how long he'll be with us.

The next thirty minutes rolled around faster than I had thought and now it was time for us to part ways to our eighth and final class.

Offering Kat a quick hug and Nic a kiss on the cheek, I made my way to AP English Lit.

Although I loved English, there was one thing I hated about the class--or rather who was in it.

When I walked through the door, a handful of classmates were already milling around waiting for the bell to ring.

And when it did two minutes later, I let out a relieved sigh when I realized, I had yet another class today that was going to be Torez free.

"Last night when I came home, my parents gave me a forty-five minute lecture on what and what not to do in Alaska. It was hard restraining myself from laughing in their faces. But after, they handed me an envelope with twenty-five hundred, so it was worth it."

I throw my head back, laughing uncontrollably as Kat tells me what had happened to her yesterday. "Apparently whale watching and pictures are a must in my mom's book. She's going to be devastated when I come back empty handed."

Snorting loudly, I lean up from my position on Kat's bed and watch as she packs her clothes into a large suitcase.

"You're mom's a sweet girl, but that's just too funny."

"Tell me about it. My dad even pulled me aside this morning and told me my best option would be to buy some postcards with whales on them. No one ever goes whale watching anymore." Kat folded another pieces of clothing before setting it neatly into her ever growing pile of clothes.

Katrina was always one for being neat and organized, while I didn't care as much.

She always blames it on her 'Brazilian' genes, but really, she's like that because she's picky and stubborn. If something's done, it has to be done right.

"Hey, I'm going to head on home. I need to catch some z's. 8:00 AM, right?"

She sends me a cheeky thumbs up as I make my way to her bedroom door. "Yup. We'll meet in the parking lot behind my house."

"Got it," I saluted her quickly before slipping out of the room.

When I made it to the front door, Mrs. Burnns was sitting on the porch swing off to the right.

"Goodbye Mrs. Burnns, it was good seeing you!"

She took a small sip of her tea before waving a dainty hand. "Bye, darling! Have fun in Alaska!"

I tried to hide the complacent smile spreading across my lips as while I headed for my car parked on the curb.

Oh, I'm sure we're gonna be having lots of fun. Just not in Alaska.
