I get Maria changed into her PJs, and tuck her in snug. "Sorry you didn't get to make to many friends tonight," my voice is soft, when I say this searching her face, but I can't read anything.
She shrugs her shoulders. "There will be other times to make friends. Where do you think grandpa was at tonight?"
The image of the rock, the note and picture form in my head. But I quickly banish the images away. "Knowing him, he probably got stuck in some boring meeting." I wave my hand, as if it was nothing. "What do you want me to read to you tonight?" I try to change the subject to get the images from coming back into my head.
She shakes her head. "I don't want a story tonight,"
"Really? Then do you want a song or anything like that?" She shakes her head. Frowning slightly, I press on. "What's on your mind kiddo?"
She shrugs her shoulders. "I don't know. I think it's just the fact that everything changing so fast, it's finally starting to catch up."
"Do you want to talk about all that?"
She sits up a little bit against the pillows. "What was she like? My real--I mean the woman that gave birth to me. What was she like?"
Shrugging my shoulders, I tuck one leg under the other. "Keep in mind, there was a good seven years gap between us at best. So when she was twenty-two, I was fifteen . When she met your dad, we didn't get to see her that often." When that monster showed up, he stayed around for to many years. We locked him up many times, but that pull he had on my sister, got him out to far many times. When he killed her, that was the end of it and I thought he was finally dead, but that's not the truth. "She was a kind person, she looked over us that were younger. She knew how to play the piano, so she would play for us and we would dance around the room."
"What was my dad like?"
Vile builds up in my throat, but I have to swallow it down and it hurts going back down. "I didn't know him well. We seen them only a couple times a year. Your grandpa didn't like him, but of course you know how he is to Austin." she shakes her head in understanding. "When your mom got pregnant, grandpa tried to talk them to moving closer, so we could help out. But your dad didn't want to do that. So when you were born-"
Nova stop it! Don't tell her anymore! A shrill voice screams out in my head.
Bile comes back up and it's almost to strong to swallow. Getting up, I kiss her on the head. "We'll talk more tomorrow, I need to go see if I can get grandpa to pick up his dang phone. He has his mind link blocked, so phone is the only way to get ahold of him." Going to the door, I smile at her. "Night Maria."
"Night mom,"
Closing the door, I have to hold on to the wall, the hallway starts to spin. "August," my voice is but a whisper, but he is there at my side, holding me close to him. "I don't feel good."
He picks me up in his arms and takes us to our room. He places me down on the bed, cupping my face in his hands. "What's wrong?"
"My sister, I heard her. Her spirit lashed out at me, when I was telling Maria about her and her dad."
"I thought you didn't know a lot about her dad?"
Shaking my head, I take his hands in mine and pull them from my face into my lap. "I don't, I was telling her truth. We hardly ever seen them and what times we did see him, he was causing problems." I show him images of the past that ever happened with that man. The blood shed he caused, the mind twisting he did to my sister, and the last image of thinking I killed him. I had cut off his hand and I had thought the poison from the silver would go up his arm and kill him. But it turns out, that wasn't true. "Can you help me out of this dress please?"
"Yeah," his voice is soft, there is no sexual hint in his voice; no lust in his eye's.
Standing up, he turns me and zips the dress down, where is pools around my feet. He takes my hair and undoes everything I did to it, to where it ends up just flowing down my back. Grabbing his hands in mine, I thread our fingers together. His broad covered chest, pressed against my naked back. "Do you think, you'll ever forgive me for bringing you into this messed up family?"
He kisses me on the back of the head. "Babe, there nothing to forgive. There a reason we are mated, we lean on one another and fight together. So never think that us ending up together, was a mistake."
Leaning my head back against his chest, he breaths in deep. "Let's go to bed, I'm worn out. We'll make a game plan about dad tomorrow."
"Okay," crawling in bed first, he strips down into his boxers and we spoon together.
Nova Nightmare:
Clawing threw the darkness that has consumed the woods from back home, I stop all of the sudden when I see Evy. My beautiful older sister. She sits on a rock, she dressed in white. Her hair over her shoulder. "Nova, it's been awhile." Her voice is soft, her eyes bottomless.
"Evy, that was you telling me not to say any more about him." She shakes her head. "Do you know where he is?"
She shakes her head. "No I can't see him, where ever he is. I can't see it."
Something moves in the tree's, it's big and fast. "There something in here with us." My voice is harsh whisper.
She shakes her head again, but there no emotions on her face. "Nova, you have to be careful, he's planning on getting Maria before her first shift."
Something in the woods snap, making me turn searching for movements. "She to young to shift yet," I remind her.
Something cool touches my shoulder, making me turn again and Evy there. Staring at me. Her eye's deep and empty. "This moon, can change that. Protect my baby Nova. Prove that you are a better mother, then I ever could be." A howl that makes my blood run cold lift to the air. "Run Nova! Run now!" she screams out.
The tree's come to life and come to life, reaching out for us. A scream rips threw my throat, as the tree limbs grab me and the beast paws come closer. "Evy run!" I scream. Looking back, she already gone, as if she was never there.
The paws grow closer and closer. You will return what you have stolen! A deep voice roars out and before I am consumed by the darkness, I see the beast jump in the air, it's sharp teeth ready to rip me apart as they had to so many before me.
"August!"
