Chapter 12
"My hands,
Your hands
Tied up
Like two ships.
Drifting
Weightless.
Waves try to break it.
I'd do anything to save it.
Why is it so hard to say it?
My heart,
Your heart
Sit tight like book ends.
Pages
Between us
Written with no end.
So many words we're not saying.
Don't wanna wait 'til it's gone.
You make me strong.
I'm sorry if I say, "I need you."
But I don't care,
I'm not scared of love.
'Cause when I'm not with you I'm weaker.
Is that so wrong?
Is it so wrong
That you make me strong?"
I stopped there, and majority of the class clapped, except for the witches, and mike, who was now staring right back at me. I couldn't look away, and neither would he.
"That was absolutely amazing!" I heard Ms. Trout say. It sounded like she was far away. I was in another world, with only Mike, and I had a feeling that he felt the same way. Only it was most likely that I was wrong. I was hallucinating. Probably. I mean.. Honestly.
"Look at me when I am talking to you!" Ms. Trout exclaimed. The class went dead silent, and I snapped my head to her.
"Sorry" I apologized quietly, "and thank you."
She smiled formally, and the bell rang right on time. I headed back to my seat and got my backpack, which was bulging with books.
Someone tapped my arm. I looked over my shoulder, shrugging on my bag at the same time, and was pleased to see Mia standing there, grinning at me. I realized I had never seen her this... Enthusiastic.
"That was wonderful! You have the voice of an angel! Why don't you try out for the choir or the play? I'm sure you'd get the lead role!" She exclaimed. She had never been this loud in front of me before. I felt flattered that she was now.
Beaming, I answered, "Haha thanks so much! But I'm too shy for that, and I'm not really into it. But thank you! That means a lot to me."
Mia nodded and replied, "That's too bad, though. But I understand." She then handed me a post it with her number. "Text me.. We need to work on our social studies project."
"Right" I replied, grabbing the note and giving her my number too. And with that, she left the building. I started towards my locker because I had forgotten one of my books.
But at my locker stood Mike. I stopped in my tracks as soon as I saw him. I just stood there for a minute or two... But it felt like ages before I took another step, until I was about a foot away from him.
We just stood there in silence. I finally looked down at my shoes in defeat of the staring contest.
"Hey" he croaked, his voice cracking at the end. I glanced up at his gorgeous face (oh the things I could do to those lips....) and his face flushed a bit. It made him look adorable. He cleared his throat, "ahem. Hey, jade."
I looked past him, at my deep blue locker, replying softly, "hi."
To be honest, I didn't want to talk to him. I just .. I've had a bad day, and then I was just happy and Mia was all nice and now mike is ruining it. I didn't want to talk to him.
He just looked at me with an expression I couldn't read. Finally he cleared his throat and took another step forward. We were so close, breathing the same air. I wanted to run far away from here though. I just wished to leave.
But his words changed my wishes.
"Jade. I- That- uh... Jade... I...," he seemed to be searching for words. I suppressed a sigh, looking back down at my shoes.
When he finally spoke, I looked up and past him, at my locker which I longed to go to. He shocked me with his words though, saying, "jade. I am so so sorry I didn't talk to you. I know I avoided you and I don't know why. I just... I don't know. But that... That performance in music was..." He smiled gently, "it was amazing. Beyond words."
He took a step closer. I could smell his cologne, and his eyes looked darker. One of the lights above us flickered, and I darted my eyes to his, which were filled with .... Mischief. After all, he IS labeled, in my eyes, as a 'bad boy'.
"Thanks" I whispered. Why did I whisper? I am so stupid!! Why can't I just talk. Gosh Jade now he's gonna think you're weird. Which you are. Ugh.......!!!!!!!!
I took in a deep breath as he continued, "So... There's a party this Friday."
I exhaled in shock, my eyes widening. He clearly couldn't help it; he chuckled huskily at my surprise.
I just nodded, and he continued further, "So... You should come. It'll be fun, babe" he winked at me, and I warily stared at him.
"Ohkay... I'll think about it," I replied straightly, stepping away, and towards my locker. He spun around to face me as I swung open my locker and knelt down to get my book. After I slammed it shut and turned around, he hesitantly offered me a ride home.. On his motor bike. I don't know if that was supposed to impress me or something, but all I was in the mood for was to go home. So I curtly shook my head but thanked him, and nearly sprinted home and locked myself into my bedroom. I popped in my headphones and closed my eyes, wandering far far away from this world.
