We sat there in silence. I had no interests in his presence and he seemed to sense that. Though he made no motion towards me, he seemed to have interests in my actions. After a second of silence I rose out of my seat and walked over to my long discarded book on the floor. I picked the book off the floor and resumed my seat across from James. His eyes glanced to the book. I opened the book and flipped through before returning to the page with Hiemdall on it. The corner of the page is bent. I sigh. I tried my best over the years to keep this book in its best condition. Oh well. It can't be helped now. I resume reading where I left off. Hiemdall is the gatekeeper to Asguard. Protecting it from any enemies who look to threaten his home and the royal family who rule it. His eyes search throw out the nine realms watching, searching. He's a fierce warrior. Always on guard and ready for battle should anyone attempt to surpass. He wields a mighty sword as a weapon, but also the key for portal to anywhere in the Nine realms. The sword is fashioned to….
“(Y/n)...” James says interrupting my train of thought. I lower the book and look at him.
“Yes, James?” I ask him. He smiles softly.
“What are you reading?”
I glance and the book before speaking.
“You wouldn't know anything about it.” I say closing closing the book. I wasn't going to get any reading done now.
“I would like to try. I happen to read a lot, so I may know of the book you're reading.”
“I doubt it.”
“Try me.” he says. I sit up taller in my chair getting in a more comfortable position.
“It's a book on Asguard and it's people.” I say.
“Asguard?” he folds his arms thinking to himself. He focused his gaze on the floor trying to see if the name as any correlation with his memories. After a minute of thinking he finally says “I think you have a book I actually haven't read.”
“I know. I believe I told you this before you insisted on knowing.”
“I know. I just…..um.. so, um… may I read it? Then maybe we can talk about it together.” he offers smiling hesitantly.
“I don't think you'd be interested. In fact I think you'd be quite bored and think I'm strange. Personally I would rather keep my book protected by my hands, and my hands only.” I say tightening my grip on my book.
“I see.” he sighs. “Listen, (Y/n). I'm trying to get to know you better. Attempting to make the situation more comfortable. This way when we get married and live together in my home then it won't seem like we're living with strangers we just met, but I can see my efforts are futile. “
“No, no. I'm being rude. I should be more open minded with your presence. I can see you're trying. The least I can do is do the same.” I set my book down behind me in my seat while I move up to the edge of the seat. “Would you like to join me on the balcony?”
“I would love to.” he stands from his seat and offers me his hand. I take it and he leads me to the double glass doors that leads to the balcony of the study. He opens the door and lets me walk through first. I nod to him as thanks. I walk to the railing and lean against it as he follows.
“It's a beautiful day outside.” I say. He nods in agreement.
“Yes. I think so. It's a rare sight during the rainy season.”
I look over the railing and into the garden. I see our parents sitting at a table discussing things about the wedding. I frown. James notices.
“What's wrong?” he asks. I shake my head. He follows my gaze to the garden. He sighs.
“It's my parents isn't it?” he says with a frown.
I nod. “I'm sorry.”
“Don't be. I know my mother can be harsh. I promise when we are married and all this planning is over you'll be seeing a lot less of her than you have these past few weeks.” he chuckles to himself.
“Okay. I'm going to hold you to that.” I laugh.
“Ah. I see I've finally got a smile.” he says moving closer to me. I cover my mouth.
“No, no. Don't hide it. I don't get to see it that often.” he says removing my hand from my mouth. “See? It's lovely.”
I blush. “Thank you.” Perhaps James isn't so bad.
We spend the next few hours talking with each other. Getting to know each other better. I like James. A lot. I wouldn't mind him being my future husband even if he does lack that spark I desire. He's so much better than previous men I've seen. I prefer him than someone I know I'd hate. He's wonderful despite his mother's intense bitterness towards me. I'm sure things will be fine. We ended up moving back to the study sitting on the floor surrounded by books. If his parents saw us like this his mother would surely have a cow. She's probably the most bitter and egotistical woman in all of England. The Queen would stir in her bed if she had the unfortunate accident of meeting this woman. James seems to be use to such thoughts from others regarding his mother and can only sadly agree, but none the less stick up for his mother. He loves her no matter what. Truly honorable. I hope Lady Gallum appreciates him and realizes how lucky she is to have a son like James.
“I've enjoyed my evening here.” he says smiling.
“I'm glad. I've certainly enjoyed your company.”
“I can say with absolute certainty now that I look forward to our wedding. I believe you'll make a lovely, and shall I say entertaining, wife.”
“Thank you, but I wouldn't say that yet. Living with someone is much different than talking for an afternoon. We'll see if you feel the same way after the ceremony.” I say standing up. He follows in suite.
“James?... James!... James, where are you? We're leaving now!” Lady Gallum says from down stairs.
He calls back. “I'm coming, mother!”
“Well, hurry up! We will not be waiting for you all day!”
James sighs and turns to me with an apologetic expression. “I'll be going now, (Y/n).
“Yes. It seems so.” I say walking with him out the room and down the hall.
“I suppose the next time we’ll be meeting is under the altar.” he says once we reach the stairs.
“Yes. I'll see you again when you are made my husband.”
He smiles. “Until then…” he kisses my lips briefly. “I'll see you.”
I look at him in surprise as he descends the stairs where his parents wait for him. I didn't know what to do, so I stood there until they disappeared behind the door. My stepmother closes the door behind them and looks up at me with with a smile. She notices my surprised look and walks over to me. “(Y/n), What's wrong?” she asks taking my hand. I shake my head. “Um… nothing. He just…”
“He just what? Hurt you? Did he hurt you?” she asks getting protective.
“What? No! No, he didn't. He just… kissed… me.” my voice trailed off near the end of my sentence. She smiles at me in a knowing way.
“Oh, I see.” she trails the last word. “And what did you think about that?”
I shrug. “Well I-”
“Wait, wait! Let's go up to the guest room and you can tell me there. I'll have Sebastian bring us up some tea.”
I nod. “Alright.” I turn and walk back down the hallway this time going past the study and down to the very end of the hall and making a left. Then I go midway down the hall before reaching my guestroom. I open the door and look around. These mansion bedrooms are about as big as our house. So much space. This room is a cream color and gold. There's a king size bed in the middle with a silk bed curtain hanging around it. At the far end is glass double door that lead out to a small balcony. Everything is so pretty. I walk over to the bed and sit down. The bed makes a soft thud while shaping my legs comfortably. I pull off my heels and toss them to the side. I fall backwards onto the bed and sigh loudly. It's been a long day. My stepmother walks in a few minutes later with Sebastian following her. She plops down next me as Sebastian sets the tea down on the cream night stand.
“Thank you, Sebastian. You may go.” she says and he nods and walks out of the room. She smiles excitedly. She's like a schoolgirl again. “Okay. Tell me everything.”Well. Getting back into the groove was a bit more difficult than I thought, especially considering I don't remember parts of the story I wanted to incorporate. I'll try to update timely. I feel a bit more motivated to wrote since I just watched Thor: Ragnorok today. My story takes place waaaay before then, but whatever. Enjoy the story. Tootles!
