Slightly Sleeping

Dean had lost track of how many shots he had taken. It wasn't doing anything to him, he was practically immune to alcohol at this point. But with Cas gone, Charlie had given Dean her blessing to get as wasted as he wanted. He looked at his watch that read 11:04. He should really be getting back soon.

He wasn't really worried about Cas, he trusted Charlie with his life and knew she would make him feel really comfortable... as long as she didn't start talking about all that gay stuff... crap.

He whipped out his phone and dialed her number. "You need a ride?"
"I'm sober enough to assume you're freaking Cas out about being bi or pan." Dean could hear her smile through the phone. "I'm not freaking him... okay I kinda did but I didn't mean to... did he tell you anything about this 'Naomi'?"

Dean shook his head but then remembered she couldn't see him. "No, we didn't really talk much. Why is he okay?"

"An older sister that is... a bit controlling. When will you be back in the dorm? I want to talk to you." Dean ran his hand through his hair. "I don't know. I can get an uber but I can't drive right now. Why? Did something happen?"

"He's coming back from the bathroom. Just... hurry, okay?" Dean heard the phone beep. He sighed and called an uber on his phone, grabbed his coat for the second time that night, and headed out to wait for his ride.

"Hey Cas, you want me to chill with you until Dean gets back?" Charlie turned towards Cas who was nodding gratefully for the offer. For the chance not to be alone.

"Did you at least enjoy the ice cream?" she sat on the bed next to him. "Yes. Thank you." Charlie nodded and opened her mouth to say something but got interrupted by Cas' phone ringing.

His eyes went wide in fear. "It's Naomi. If I don't pick up..." Charlie grabbed his hand and looked him in the eye. "It's okay Cassie. You can do it." Castiel shrugged off the nickname. He's only been at the school for a couple of days and he's already acquired a handful of them.

He pushed the green answer button and hit the speaker button. "Hi Naomi..." he tried to keep his voice calm but he was panicking. "Castiel! How did the move go?" even Charlie could tell that she wasn't actually interested in anything Cas had to say.

"Do you actually care, Naomi?" Cas rolled his eyes and sighed. "I mean, you didn't come with me to move into college, you made sure that Dad didn't come either, and now-"
"Are you questioning my authority?"

"No Naomi! I'm just-"
"Excuse me, Castiel, I think we are supposed to be studying right now." Charlie focused on making her voice as innocent as possible. "Who is that?" Naomi snapped. "I'm Charlotte, Castiel is tutoring me for school!" Charlie rolled her eyes but her voice sounded like a four-year-old.

"Good job Castiel. Proceed with your studying." Naomi hung up and Cas exhaled the breath he was holding in throughout the entirety of the call. "Thank you so much, Charlie. You've saved me so many times. How can I thank you?"

Charlie smiled and put her hands back on his shoulders. "Just... try to relax for me and know you can always call me," she said as she took his phone and put her and Dean's number in his contacts. "You can always call us. Okay?" Cas nodded trying to choke back tears. "Thank you, Charlie."

Cas stared at his phone, tears threatening to fall out. "What? What's wrong?" She seemed so worried that Cas felt more loved then he had in a while. "I don't want to let Dean down. Him, you, you've both been the sweetest people to me and I'm just going to let you down... I don't want to let you down. You have done so much for me and I just got here today... I probably seem like a useless pile of panic. That is all I am... panic."

"Cas..." he looked up and came face to face with Dean who only seemed slightly drunk, but sober enough to know the extent of what Cas said. "Cas... no you're... Cas..." he turned to the wall and the tears slowly trickled down his face feeling like acid.

"We have class in two days. I should get to bed." and with that, he laid in his bed, Charlie still sitting at the foot of it, and didn't talk again for the whole night. "Dean..." Cas felt the weight leave his bed as Charlie took Dean into the hall.

A little while later, Dean came back in, spent a little bit of time unpacking, then stood above Cas' bed. Cas could feel him hovering before he began to talk. "Cas you aren't worthless. Not to me, not to Charlie. I don't know you that well, but I can already tell that we're going to get along just fine."

He plopped on his bed and his breathing became even. Cas fell asleep watching Dean's chest rise up and down, and listening to the even pattern of his breaths.

Castiel woke up later with his head swarming with thoughts. He felt a body hovering above him and before he moved, he could hear Dean's voice gently talking to him. "I don't know why I'm doing this Novak. I used to do this with Sammy to help both of us sleep but... I don't know what makes me feel like I have to do it with you." he sighed before continuing.

"Sammy is doing well in school... he started a while ago at Stanford... he has a girlfriend, Moore I think. Jessica Moore. She's a good kid. She's taking good care of him. I like her a lot. Dad met her the other day, I wouldn't know unless Sammy told me. Dad has been kind of distant since I left for school but... I just don't know what to do Novak. Never mind... don't listen to me, sorry. See you in the morning. We can go to a library or something else you nerds like to do." Cas heard Dean get up and sink back into his mattress.

Castiel had a hard time going back to sleep that night. His head was filled with so many thoughts he was scared Dean could hear them. He sighed and tears silently began to trickle down his face as he realized, maybe he wasn't the only one with issues.
