After meeting my mother's husband, Thomas, I had practically taken a decision about my nearest future. I was still upset and hurt with my mother, but also knew I would..I wanted to...start building a relationship with her. And besides, there were Tom and Emily. We deserved knowing each other. And yet, in all that, I wanted to consider Sue's opinion...and Allen and Jess's too.

Sue was in her bedroom, packing things, since we were going back to San Francisco the following morning. I hadn't had the chance to show her the letters from my father, or his picture.

-Hey...Mary told me your uncle had something for you two. It was important, she said.

-Yeah...I just came to show it to you. It was his letters from Europe and a picture. -and I handed it to her. She gave me a surprised look.

-It's just you. Wow...it must have been really shocking...

-Pretty much. Listen, I...Well, I've been thinking if I should come back here, next year, and..

-Do it. A year goes by fast, and now it's what you need.

-But you and me...I don't want to be far from you, either.

-There's nothin' to worry about, you won't get rid of me that easy. We'll manage to see each other, in Thansgiving day, or in Christmas, or whenever we  can.  Then, next year, when school is finally over, I'll  come to Montana University.

I smiled at her, and we kissed. It would be hard not having Sue near next year, but she was right, time goes fast. But there was another issue I had to think about, and this would probably be difficult to deal with.

-Come with me, I have to talk to Allen and Jess, I will need their advice on something. And probably my uncle's one, as well.

-What are you thinking of?

-Well, with all this, and now I know I've got a family of my own, I want to emancipate from the Stevens. I have talked about it with May, and she agrees, but we don't know what steps must we take to do it, or how long will it last. In my case, besides, I will be eighteen next year, and I don't think they cared that much if I live with them or not, but May doesn't want to go back either, and she's just sixteen, they can force her to stay with them.

-Hadn't thought of that, but makes sense.  Let me close the suitcase and I go with you...

-I'll go tell May, will wait you downstairs.

Allen and Jess were in the living room, with our uncle. May had told me she would be in the garden, with our siblings.

-I've just talked to Sue, she encouraged me to go ahead. It's funny, she said she was my lucky girlfriend, but it seems I'm the lucky one here.

-It's settled then...it will be a big change, but it's the only thing we can do. I'm glad you've made up your mind.  Sue, we're here! We were about to talk to Allen, Jess and uncle Charles.

It was a moving, but clarifier conversation. Jess seemed to be rather sad with the idea of May and me moving to Montana, but she did understand our reasons. We would sure miss her and Allen, but both of them knew they would be welcome whenever they wanted. And who knows, maybe they'd finally move there too. And Charles, our uncle, gave us some interesting clues on what to do to emancipate. He also told us we could count on him for legal support if things were hard with the Stevens...
