Ramon's P.O.V.
I woke up to glistening sunlight and Jessie leaning his face on my hospital bed. It was now Sunday morning and I didn't feel much better given the fact all I had was a coffee and can of soda yesterday. Jessies head perked up at the sound of me rustling around and smiled his dreary dead eyed smile at me. I was angry at him, after what he said to Parker last night. Why did he have to snap like that?
"Morning." He said pulling the shades up with a swift move of his long arm pulling on the string.
"Hey morning." I said. "How is Parker?"
He looked at me confused. "What do you mean?"
My heart skipped a beat. He didn't know Parker was in the eating disorder unit.
"I can tell something is on your mind. What happened to him?" He asked getting up and pouring water into a glass cup.
"Well... he was submitted to the eating disorder clinic after he fainted last night, or what they call the ED unit. I'm not sure how he is doing since I can't leave this room, I thought you might know but you just found out."
Jessie stared at me in surprise and dropped the glass of water to the floor. His hands were shaking and his tall thin frame seemed to shrink from the fright.
"You remember my sister Veronica? How I told you she had an ED as well? She's in the same clinic right now as him. If he sees her, he's gonna be mad I didn't tell him about her. Mostly when they're now in the same condition." He sat down on the floor and played with a piece of glass from the shattered cup.
"Wait I thought you said she was doing better?" I asked sitting up.
"Well, she was. Last night, before I visited you guys she had a huge relapse. Took a bunch of laxatives and pills, she had to get her stomach pumped. My parents tried to feed her when she woke up. They were trying to be nice and picked out applesauce, yogurt, easier things to eat but she threw them against the wall and they had to put her in restraints. She's so young, and it's tearing me apart. My family is already genetically thin, and she looks like absolute skin and bones after this disorder has taken over her brain. I know I whispered something to Parker last night, I can tell he told you about it by the way you looked at me when you woke up. I'm sorry, last night just wasn't great for me." He took the glass and cut his finger with it making me startled until he got a napkin and wrapped it around.
"I had no idea, Jessie I'm so so sorry. Do you think she'll be okay?" I asked patting on the chair beside me for him to sit there.
"No, she won't. The doctor she's had for awhile said if she doesn't recover soon, she has a maximum of nine months to live. I know her and I don't get along, but our family wouldn't be the same without her."
We both fell silent as I wasn't sure what to say. His sister used to annoy us when we hung out at Jessies house, we told her to go away and she'd laugh. She was so full of life. And now just like Parker she was suffering everyday silently in her head where no one else could hear.
The door swung open shaking the depressing silence into alarm. A doctor walked in carrying crutches and a worker followed behind him with two breakfast trays.
"Your folks wanted me to tell you they visited you last night after you fell asleep. They said you looked so damaged they didn't want to wake you." The doctor told me setting the crutches at the foot of my bed.
"Thanks for letting me know." I said sighing.
I was now really hungry and opened the closed tray of food the worker brought for Jessie and I. There was English muffins with butter, along with apple juice and an egg. The doctor typed medical things into his computer as Jessie and I ate in complete silence. The only sound was the stillness of the room and birds chirping outside in the grey dusk sky. Jessie stared his dead glare out the window making me sad for him.
