He was a sailor
His one love the sea.
She was the keeper
Of the tall-standing lighthouse
Looming over the rocky shore.

The waters were quiet
For years
Not a single boat passed by.
But still, each night
She stood atop the tower
In the hopes of spotting one.

One day, the sailor's ship appeared
A small spot in the distance
Illuminated by the moon
The woman fumbled to light the tower
In a last desperate attempt
To finally lead the man home.

Light blasted
Washing over the waves
The sailor gazed up
And saw the woman
Huddled in her long, dark cloak
Waving to him from afar.

But the man had a wandering heart.
A spirit destined to never come back.
He could not return.
He could not follow her light.

The boat passed the lighthouse
Despite the woman's efforts.
Defeated, she turned off the light.
The shore returned
Again draped in a blanket of darkness.
She retracted her outstretched arm
Back to the comforting depths of her cloak.

The next night
And each night following
She continued to scan the waters
Awaiting the return
Of the sailor's boat.

Never giving up hope
That one day
Her light would guide him home.
