"i'm not paying for this," sooyun says as she takes a sip of her coffee.

"yeah, it's on me," yoongi assures, taking a drink of his own beverage.

"i don't usually drink coffee," she comments, scrunching her face. "it tastes funny."

"it works as an antidepressant and reduces suicidal tendencies," he adds. "drinking two to four cups per day is a good start for getting you back on track."

"two to four cups per day?!" she asks. "i hope you realize i have a below minimum wage job. there's no way i can buy multiple cups of coffee that cost like five bucks each."

"i'll buy it for you then," yoongi offers.

"no no no," she refuses. "that's too much. i only met you like two hours ago. you barely even know me."

"then let's get to know each other then," he smiles, his elbows on the table and hands propping his head up.

she sighs. "okay, whatever. shoot your questions."

"got any family?"

"a grandma in seoul and an aunt that lives with her," sooyun replies, taking another sip of coffee. she scrunches her face. "God, i really need to get used to this."

"may i ask what happened to your parents?"

"never met my dad," she says. "left when he found out my mom had me in her uterus."

he scoffs at her straightforward vocabulary. "and what happened to your mom?"

"passed last year. drug overdose. she's the one that sent me to the psychologist that suggested group therapy."

"oh," he says. "i'm sorry to hear that."

"don't be sorry, you don't even know them. and don't apologize. it's not your fault. god, i hate when people apologize for things the shouldn't be sorry for." she runs a hand frustratedly through her hair, the strands rising and falling back to her mid waist.

yoongi decides to keep quiet since her sentences were getting longer.

"so you live alone?" he finally asks.

"if alone means without a parent or guardian, then yes. i share an apartment with my roommate emi."

"is she a friend?"

"an acquaintance," sooyun concludes, swirling her drink around in the cup. "she was looking for a roomie. i gladly took up the offer. i can't afford to rent on my own. so what if she's schizophrenic? she'll never be lonely."

"oh," he says, ending the conversation.

"yoongi?" sooyun finally asks.

"yeah?"

"why are you so determined to make me better?"

he holds his breath and thinks of what to reply with.

"because i know how you feel."
