the first time i got drunk, we were together. of course we were. it was one of those nights where my mom was too sad to stay at home, so she went out and drank to forget. and so did i. sophia came over, with a mischievous smirk and a bottle of tequila, and of course i couldn't say no. we ventured out to the backyard and sat on the trampoline, sipping tequila, while i got drunk off the liquor and the sound of her laughter. i don't think i'll ever forget the way she looked, with her cheeks flushed and her eyes twinkling along with the stars above. i was so, so in love. it kind of hurt, especially when you got too close.
after a slur of drunken giggles, we came to a lull in the conversation. it wasn't uncomfortable, no. every moment with her was like a velvet dream.
"oak, i think i'm going to break up with summer," she babbled, and though a smile played across her lips, her eyes were sad. it took me a minute to process what she was saying to me. i sat up, a little dizzy.
"what?"
"she doesn't love me anymore," she spoke softly, blue eyes downcast.
"no..?" she shook her head. i held my breath while i waited for her to speak.
"she doesn't wear her necklace any more." sophia had gotten summer a necklace for her birthday, about five months after they started dating. it was sophia's name, and thinking about it made my heart hurt. i touched her hand, and she let me. "but it's okay."
"why do you say that?" my words were slower than i wanted them to be. she didn't seem to mind.
"because, i don't love her either. at least i don't think so." her thumb brushed over mine, just slightly. "i..love you." and then she leaned forward, capturing her tequila kissed lips in mine. the strongness of the alcohol drowned out the taste of summer, and for a moment, i believed her.
