dances were never really my style. but by the time sophia and i had become best friends, she had me wrapped around her thin, pretty fingers. it was those fingers that grasped mine, begging me to come to the dance with her. and so i did.
when the night rolled around, i had probably checked the mirror a thousand times. not only did i want to look pretty for sophia, but i wanted to feel pretty. however, that moment never came until i opened the front door, and she looked at me with her blue eyes and that lovely smile. turns out, moonlight is also a really pretty thing on her. it was then, illuminated by the porch light and the twinkle in her cerulean eyes, that i felt my most beautiful. she looked at me, in my black lace, and i looked at her, where she glowed in her pure white jumpsuit, and we were both alight.
"you look gorgeous, oak. black is really nice on you. it suits you." from then on, i incorporated a little bit of black into my every day outfit, whether it was a touch of eyeliner, or varnished nails, or the pair of converse that sophia always insisted on doodling on. i always wanted to be something she admired: and if she found beauty in black, then so be it. i would paint myself any color to be beautiful in the eyes of sophia lillis.
"thank you, soph. you look..wow." i was at a loss for words, of course. but she simply smiled, and everything was okay.
we spent the night, dancing, laughing, and singing the words to songs we knew but never liked. i think it was that night, as i watched her dance under the colorful lights of our high school gym, that i realized i loved sophia lillis.
and it was on my front porch that night, when she dropped me off, that i got the urge to kiss her, but never did.
