Chapter 19: Flashbacks

[Preston's POV]

Rob and I were curled up- me in my fox form and him in his wolf form -in his den, snuggling. I buried my face into his fur, letting his intoxicating scent flood my senses like a river. He smelt like lavender, and a bunch of other flowers.

Rob chuckled beside me. "Having a nice time there, I see."

I buried my face into his fur more, my scratchy voice muffled. "I-I can't help it, y-you smell sooooo g-good!~" I purred into his fur, his scent slowly putting me under it's spell. Rob laughed once again. His voice was as sweet as a melody.

I didn't want to ruin his mood, but something had been bothering me lately.

"R-Robbie?...." I asked.

"Yes love?"

".....W-What's the history between y-you and Silver?...." Once I had asked this, Rob had suddenly grown quiet.

"I-I'm sorry if m-my question upset you! I-I was just curious, and-"

Rob cut me off. "No, love, it's alright. It's time someone besides my pack knew anyways...." He took a deep breath before beginning his story.

~3rd Person POV | Flashback: A few years in the past, when Rob was simply a pup~

A large light brown wolf with brown eyes was curled up in her den around a small brown pup with dark brown markings that looked like vines.

"Oh, Silver, isn't he beautiful?.... He'll grow up into a fine wolf, don't you think so?" The female wolf, Rosemary, asked, looking up at her mate. Silver smiled proudly.

"Indeed, Rosemary."

But..... Silver had.... changed, for the worse.

"Mommy! Mommy, look what I found!" Rob called, running to his mother. In his mouth was a small blue flower.

Rosemary smiled at her son. "It's lovely, my little flower." She said, nuzzling her son.

Silver, who was watching from the sidelines, smiled slightly. But no, this wasn't a friendly smile, for more sinister intentions were hidden underneath his facade.

A few nights later, their territory was under attack.

Rosemary nudged her son into a bush. "Please, hide here, my flower. I need you to stay safe for me, alright?" Rob whined in protest, but did what his mother had told him to do.

Rosemary turned away, looking at a wolf in the shadows. "Why? Why would you do this?! Is this just.... some kind of GAME to you?!" She screamed angrily, tears sliding down her face.

"I-I thought you loved me..... but I was wrong." She muttered. The wolf in the shadows laughed, padding towards her.

"Ah, but what's control over a couple of.... disposables?~" Silver purred, a crazed look in his eyes.

"You're sickening." Rosemary spat.

Silver simply laughed, charging towards her.

Rosemary couldn't dodge fast enough.

Rob had to keep himself from screaming when he saw his mother's body fall to the floor.

Silver, satisfied with his work, padded off.

Once the intruders left, everyone came out of hiding to survey the damage.

Rob rushed over to his mother. "M-Mom!" He cried out, tears falling down his face as he nudged her.

"R-Rob....." She said weakly, her voice faint.

"D-Don't leave me mom, p-please....."

"I-I love you, m-my little flower. S-Stay strong for me....." And with her last dying wish, she was gone. Rob sobbed over her corpse.

A dark brown pup, a light and dark grey pup, and a small yellow bird made their way over to Rob.

"Oh... Rob, I'm so sorry." The dark brown pup, Jerome, said, nuzzling his friend. Kenny, the light and dark grey wolf, and Choco, the small yellow chocobo, nuzzled him as well in a comforting manner.

~End of Flashback~

"My mother was actually a hybrid, like I was. She had also gotten a bit of healing powers from my aunt I believe, who was a sorceress, but Silver was a normal wolf. Everyone had suspected that Silver had planned the attack that my mother was killed in.... and, since my mother was the Alpha, I was next in line, seeing as Silver was a traitor and her beta was killed in the attack." Rob finished explaining, tears shining in his beautiful brown eyes.

I hated seeing him sad like this. "I shouldn't have asked.... I'm sorry."

"Like I said, love, it's fine." Rob said. I nuzzled him lovingly, making him smile.
