Ophelia opened the door to her small apartment home. Her father was out. Her mother had passed away 4 years ago. The only parent she had left was a negligent and verbally abusive father.
He took care of her at the very least, feeding her and taking her to school. But he ignored her mostly. Ophelia lived alone alot of the time, because her dad worked at a job where he had to stay nights quite a bit. This made him very lazy when he was home, along with his tendency to say cruel things to his daughter.
Ophelia hated being alone all the time. She acted like she didn't care at school, but she really was very lonely. She babysat her neighbour's kids sometimes, and that was how she got her own spending money. Most of her suppers were ordered in or she'd walk to the mall to get food at the food court and visit Meryl in the clothing store she worked at.
So Ophelia entered her quiet home. It was always clean, as despite her father's lazy and rude nature, he wasn't very messy. She opened the fridge and grabbed a pepsi bottle. She walked into the living room and flopped onto the couch.
The sound of air escaping a pop bottle was heard, and nothing else for a second as Ophelia took a sip. Yes, it was a silent and empty house. The lack of noise was suffocating.
Another one of the reasons Ophelia hated being at home was how terrible her neighbours were. For example, the house was void of any noise until the slamming of a door was heard. It shook the whole building.
Yelling. Swearing. More loud banging sounds. Ophelia was always surrounded by violence at home. Whether it be the neighbours or her father's cruel words, she knew what it was like to be involved in bad home situations.
However, she wasn't used to it. Every bang, every shout, reminded her of the fights her parents used to have when her mother was alive.
"Go upstairs, sweetie." The mother coaxed her child to the stairway. The young girl obeyed and raced up the steps. She entered her room and shut the door.
Tears began to form in the little child's eyes as she plugged her ears to try and muffle the yelling. Every word dug into her like a knife. Words that were being said to her mother sounded like they were meant towards her.
Yes, tears formed, but they didn't fall. She had long since learned to stop them from falling. But she trembled, my how she trembled. Her father's booming voice echoed through her head.
"Stop it stop it stop it!" The girl whispered.
But of course, they didn't "stop it."
Ophelia sighed and switched the TV on. She changed the channel to her favourite one. The familar voices of the Crystal Gems could now be heard throughout the home.
Ophelia got up and went to the refrigerator. Opening the freezer, she found nothing she wanted. She opened a cabinet and found a soft taco kit she had forgotten that she bought. She prepared the meal, humming while she did so.
Soon, Ophelia sat down with 4 soft tacoes on a plate. As she enjoyed her meal, her eyes once more sparkled the way they did when she read. The cartoon on the television and the beloved characters held onto her heart.
She sang along to every song, and laughed at every joke. One would find it strange to see a 17 year old girl interacting with a show like that. For Ophelia, the characters in books and cartoons were people she wanted to be, or she wanted to have a friend like them. Her loneliness sparked such strange behaviour.
In the end,she was always alone. Even when in public, surrounded by people, she was seperate from everybody else. Nobody knew what went on in her head, nobody felt as hoplessly lonely as her. At least, that's what she thought.
Ophelia desperately wanted somebody who understood what being in a bad home life and having little to no friends was like to comfort her.
Somebody did.
