2D followed behind the owner of the O2, listening as he gave various directions and other details. He also listened as a paramedic explained his specific job. "We've started selling tickets and have made possible ticket buyers aware of the fact that it will be fairly short." 2D nodded. "Alrigh'. Wha' abou'-" he began, but was cut off. "You'll be happy to know that you'll be able to sit during the whole thing, just say where and you'll be good," the paramedic informed as they walked into the area with the stage and seats, then up onto the stage.
"We're gonna need a bass guita', microphone, keyboa'd, regular guita' an' a drum se'. Typical band fings, an' I wan' to si' near the fron' of the stage," 2D said, standing in the spot he wanted. "Righ' 'ere, maybe?" The owner nodded and jotted things down. "Right, anything else?" he asked. "Mu'doc will be bringin' his own bass, so ignore tha' par' abou' us needin' the bass." The owner crossed something off and 2D sat down, gazing over the thousands of seats that were to be filled in just under a week.
He cleared his throat, coughing a bit, but it subsided. "Could I maybe ge' a microphone over 'ere? I need t' do a sound check, t' make sure I'm able t' do fis," he said and a microphone stand was brought to him. "Mu'doc? Wha' are you doin' 'ere? You're no' s'ppose' t' be 'ere fo' anothe' hou'," he said and Murdoc shrugged. "Surprise?" he said, kissing 2D on the cheek. Both had publicly come out about their relationship to a select few people, and they were all fine with it.
2D sighed, setting the microphone up at the front of the stage and turning it on. "Testing, testing. One, two," he said, cheering silently when his voice echoed throughout the room. 2D pulled out his phone and opened the music app, searching for Sound Check (Gravity). He pushed play and set it on the ground next to him. "Gravity, on me. Never let me down, gently. Gravity, on me. Never let me down, no no. Gravity," he sang, letting the music continue. Then, he paused it.
"Muds, I kinda finished one of the songs I've been writin', bu' I don' know wha' I'll call i'," 2D stated. "Well, how does it go?" Murdoc asked and the singer pulled his iPad from the bag on his back. "Well, it's kinda cheesy, maybe. An' it's mainly somefink I worked on wif my iPad an' keyboard. Hold on, I'll play a bi' of i'."
2D turned on the keyboard that was brought to him and turned the setting on for a regular piano. He played a few notes before clearing his throat. "Where, does it come from? When everything was outside, busted and blue. How, in the universe. Through the lithium, busted and blue. All my life. All my life. Beam a light, on me I am a satellite. And I can't get back without you. Busted and blue."
He coughed. "I was finking maybe calling i' Busted an' Blue, since mos' of the lyrics are tha', bu' I don' know," 2D said, cheeks turning pink. Murdoc smiled. "That's a great name for it," he said and the bluenette beamed. "Really? I fough' i' would be too generic o' somefink."
Murdoc shook his head. "It's fine. Play me more?" he suggested. That was his only weakness. He loved hearing Stuart sing. 2D nodded and continued the song. "Where, do they come from? The wires that connect two worlds, weightless and fall on your body. 'Til, we're invincible. I'm with you throughout it, choose, busted and blue."
An applause echoed through the room and 2D looked up, smiling at Noodle. "So, you've decided t' come 'ere as well?" he asked and she nodded. "Yep! Russ'll be here later. He's out buying a new drumhead," she said and 2D laughed. He remembered how the last time they practiced, Russel hit the drum too hard and broke it.
Noodle sat next to him and pushed a key on the keyboard, eliciting a pained reaction from Murdoc. "So, what was that you were singing?" she asked. "A song I migh' wanna play nex' Friday. I dunno. I's still no' perfec' enough," 2D said.
Murdoc sat on the other side of 2D. "Is there more to Busted and Blue?" 2D nodded. "Yeah, bu' you'll 'ave t' wai' until Friday," he said and Murdoc groaned. "That's not fair," he said, pouting, causing 2D to laugh. "Is too fair. I's a su'prise, Mu'doc. Bu' you'll love i', trus' me," he said, beginning to play Hongkongaton. "I've decided on the songs I'm gonna play. They're Hongkongaton, Stop The Dams, Every Plane' We Reach Is Dead, Slow Country an' Busted an' Blue."
Murdoc smiled. "In that specific order?" he asked and the singer shook his head. "No, Stop The Dams las'. Firs' is Every Plane' We Reach, then Hongkongaton, then Slow Country. Busted an' Blue after tha', then Stop The Dams. Maybe anothe' song as an encore, bu' I don' know. Maybe two."
2D sighed. Thinking was hard. It hurt his head and made him nauseous, but he guessed the nausea was mostly because he was literally going to die. He hated to think about the fact that he only had months left to live. But the thing is, he was happy that he'd die being the happiest person he could be. He wouldn't die with Murdoc hating him and he was fine with that.
He heard footsteps and looked up, seeing Damon and Jamie standing a few feet away. 2D stood up with Murdoc doing the same thing. The two looked over and they both gave an oddly similar, yet sympathetic smile.
"How've ya been, mate?" Damon asked and the bluenette shrugged. "Eh, so-so. I'm dying though, so tha' sucks," he said. Jamie frowned, wrapping his arms awkwardly around the taller male. Murdoc stared at the two, keeping an eye on the artist's hands, which stayed on 2D's back. 2D stood still, unsure of how to hug Jamie.
Soon however, Jamie stopped hugging Stuart and Murdoc placed his hand on the singer's shoulder. "Bit possessive, ain't ya?" Damon asked and Murdoc raised his brow. 2D laughed and placed his hand on Murdoc's. "That's... actually cute," Jamie said, "even though you are a tiny bit possessive," he continued and left the main part of the venue, probably to speak to the stage manager.
Damon sat at the keyboard and played a melody. Even for the singer of Gorillaz, who was almost a natural at keyboard and could play even the most difficult songs, it was completely mesmerising, to say the least.
After an hour of discussing what the night would be like, then watching Jamie create visuals, the three band members and Damon and Jamie left. Murdoc laced his fingers through 2D's and rubbed his thumb on the back of his hand softly. This soothed the bluenette and he leaned into the bassist. "There are six months to go," he said and Murdoc looked up. "Please stop. Stop saying that. I don't want to hear about that anymore."
Stuart blinked. Well, it's true, he said to himself. I'm going to die in six months and there's nothing he can do about it. The two continued to walk to the car, fingers still intertwined, but they were silent. They stayed silent the whole ride home, and didn't speak until the next morning.
oOo
if you look on my profile and on the message board, you'll see the official set list. i'm quite happy with it.
dw, they're not arguing, murdoc is just taking it badly. he doesn't want 2D to die but 2D has accepted it.
next chapter will be cute and not at all sad, i promise.
