Rachel's POV

I left the sleepover at Alex's house with Eileen and Miranda. We waved bye to Noelene and Michelle who were staying over a little longer. I was smiling so hard, relieved to have made some amazing friends at Cronville High.

"So..!" Eileen breathed.
I looked at her.
"How's Calum?"
"Oh god!!!" Miranda whined. "Stop it with the Calums already! He's with Layne and I'm pretty sure he will be for a long time!"
Eileen looked a little defeated, so I spoke up.
"Calum's been quiet for the last couple of days like he's been mourning ir something."
They frowned.
"Mourning? Why would Calum be sad?"
I shrugged.
"I overheard him in the bathroom the other day on the phone, and he was speaking to his mum and said "what? they still haven't given you any food?""
"Waaaiiit??" screamed Miranda."You were in the GUYS BATHROOM?"
I blushed a little and nodded.
"I accidentally didn't look at the sign on the dot when I walked in.
"Don't worry." Eileen comforted. "I still renewed when I did that!"
Miranda snorted. "now THAT was funny."
We laughed and walked off together, giggling and gossiping about life.

Calum's POV

I was pacing in my room, a drop of sweat dripping down my cheek.
"Mum? Are you alright? Are they treating you well?"
A croaky voice responded "Yes Calum, I'm fine."
She started coughing loudly.
"Mum? you yhere? HELLO?"
A nurses voice came from the phone.
"Sorry dear, your mother is feeling unwell. Try calling her again in a couple of hours." She hung up.
I sighed heavily and fell to the ground, my hands in my face.
My mother was in hospital- dying of pneumonia- and they are not feeding her. Ill just have to suck it up and go to school.

I got to school early and went straight to period one maths. I saw Rachel sitting at her seat and wondered what she was doing here so early. I threw my bag onto the floor and took my seat next to her.

"What are you doing here so early?" I asked.
"I could ask you the same thing."
There it was. That feeling again- the feeling that I could tell her anything.
I sighed.
"If I tell you, will you promise my to tell anyone?"
She looked confused as to why I waited ask that question.
"Sure... I won't tell anyone."
I took a deep breath.
"My mum is in hospital with pneumonia."
Her hazel eyes opened wide. Rachel nodded, to indicate for me to go on.
"She is dying and they're not feeding her. whenever I call her, she seems to be unwell and the nurses have to finish our calls."
Rachel looked sad.
"My mum died when I was young, and everyone said I was going through depression, but I got over it. only my dad has looked after me."
I felt sorry for her, and wanted to comfort her.
"The same thing happened to my dad."
She looked up, very confused.
"So if your mum dies..."
"I'll be an orphan."
We were silent for give minutes.
"Hey, can I have your number? we can talk some time."
Her smile lit up the room.
"Here!" she said, handing me a piece of paper. On it was inscribed the numbers
0407-683-155.
That minute, the teacher walked in.
I smiled and looked at Ms Cooch.
"Okay calas, let's start with algebra!"
Groans filled the room. Eugh, ALGEBRA.
