CHAPTER 9:

It was about two weeks later, when I saw Gabriel’s mysterious status update. We would hang out at every chance we got. He joined Dean and me during our free periods. Dean was still warming up to the others, but he was getting there. He would come over to Mike’s house, mostly unannounced. It was strange, yet endearing, with how he was completely at ease with Mike, Gabriel, and me, but he was still unsure with how to handle Jenny, Alison, Marc, and Michelle.

“So, what do we have planned today?” Dean asked as we walked to school from the parking lot.

“We are joining the others at the cafeteria,” I said. I looked to my right and I saw he was standing still. “Is anything wrong?”

“Maybe, I don’t know,” Dean said. Sweat glistened on his forehead.

“Dean, you can do this. It’s been more than two weeks. We can do it once a week and the rest of the time we’ll be at Mike’s truck.”

“So, uh, we’ll go just today, right?”

“Yeah, until you get to know them all. They’re not bad people.”

“I know, sorry, I just can’t help it,” Dean said. “I don’t get why I kept panicking.”

I put my hands on his shoulders. He stopped fidgeting and looked at me.

“I’m here, Dean. Nothing is going to go wrong. I’ll be there with you.”

He nodded as he tried taking calming breaths.

“Caleb, Dean, glad I caught you.”

We watched Gabriel jog towards us.

“What’s up?” Dean said through shuddering breaths. He forced a smile, but his shoulders were still tense. It was not the smile I was used to. I remembered to remove my hands.

“I’ve decided to come out.”

“Uh, come out as what?” I asked.

“You’re kidding me, right?  Gabriel said. “Do I have to wear it on a shirt?”

“Please don’t tell me that…”

He interrupted me by unzipping his jacket. He was wearing a black shirt with the words ‘I’M GAY’ in stark pink letters. Dean smirked and gave him a thumbs-up. We saw Danny and Carmen coming from where Gabriel came from.

“First of all, I love your honesty,” I said. “Second, I wish you didn’t go so cliché.”

“Is it too much?” he asked.

“Just a smidge,” I said.

“I think it’s great,” Danny said. “I’ve got your back.”

“So, when do you plan to do this?” Dean asked.

“Will you hold my jacket?” he asked as he shrugged off his varsity jacket and tossed it to Danny. He and Carmen followed him into the school.

“He’s really doing it,” I muttered.
