CHAPTER 26:

After our first date, the days seemed to pass by pretty fast. Before we knew it, we were celebrating our first Valentine’s Day together. We planned a group date with dinner and a movie. Everyone was excited, because even Ali had a date, who happened to be the captain of the decathlon team she was on.

“You two ready to go?” Mike asked. Dean was taking one last look at the mirror.

“Yeah,” he said. I was already waiting by the door, where Mike was.

I was with Dean in his car and Alison and Milo, her date, was carpooling with us. Milo was a tall guy, taller than Dean, which made Alison look even shorter. They looked alike with auburn hair and brown eyes. Marc and Michelle were with Mike and Jenny. We arrived at the restaurant and it was a pizza parlor, nothing fancy. The place was packed, but eventually there was a booth that fit all eight of us. The girls managed to ask Milo every question under the sun, while the Mike and Marc snickered at how flustered he was. They did not stop until Alison shushed them.

“I remember how they did that to me,” Dean whispered.

“You handled it pretty well,” I said. “But, they were interrogating you as a new friend and not someone’s boyfriend.”

“I think they didn’t see any difference.”

“Was I that painfully oblivious?”

“Yes, you were,” he said. “It was a good thing for me, because I’m painfully shy.”

“You were painfully shy, now, not so much.”

“You have that effect on me,” he said, holding my hand.

“Caleb,” Ali whispered. “They’re torturing Milo and I really like him. I don’t want Jenny and Michelle scaring him off.”

“We’ll save him for you,” I said.

Dean and I tried to redirect the attention off of Milo.

“Ladies, give the guy a break,” Dean said.

“We will,” Jenny said. “Just tell us how your first date was.”

“Yeah, you guys haven’t given us any details and that date was last month,” Michelle said. Jenny nodded along with her.

“What’s there to tell guys?” I said. “It was the perfect first date.”

“We know that, but what happened?”

“Fine,” Dean said. “I taught him how to make cookies and cupcakes.” The girls sighed in unison. “Then we brought them to the orphanage I always go to.” All of them awed at us.

“Guys, that’s so cute and sweet,” Jenny gushed and even Marc, Mike, and Milo agreed with her.

“It wasn’t much,” Dean started.

“It was perfect,” I interrupted.

Three party-sized pizza pies arrived at our table, along with chicken wings and fries.
