Jenny Simmons: Am I the only one who’s excited?
Mike Williams: I’m sure Alison is.
CHAPTER 24:
It was the first day back to school after the holidays. I did not feel like I was ready to be at school because of the ambush. It was like I was no longer safe there, but I had my friends and Dean with me, so I forced myself to go. Everyone was excited for us that Dean and I got together, even if Jenny and Alison had to pay Michelle for losing their little bet.
“Mike, let’s go,” I said, knocking on the door. “You know you’re going to see Jenny in a bit, so you can stop texting her.”
“Wipe that smirk off your face,” he said as he grabbed his backpack.
“I’m not smirking,” I said.
“I don’t have to look at you to know, Leb. It’s not like you do the same with Dean.”
“I don’t do the same with Dean.”
“Prove it.”
“Come on,” I said. “We’re gonna be late.”
About fifteen minutes later, Mike pulled into the student parking lot. Everyone was already waiting for us. Dean had a big smile when he saw the truck coming in. Crinkles formed at the sides of his eyes as he smiled. When I got out of the truck, Dean walked over and took hold of my hand.
“What took you two so long?”
“Mike’s fault,” I said with a quick peck on his lips. “Are you ready for this?”
“If I get you out of this, then it’s all worth it.” We trailed behind everyone. They were on their way into the school, when my feet felt stuck in place. Dean kept walking until I managed to pull him back.
“What’s wrong?”
“I, um, I’m nervous,” I said. “My feet feel frozen.”
“We’ll be fine, Leb,” he said as he held my cheek. “I want to do this and you’re safe with me. I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you before, but I won’t let it happen again.”
“You’re right. We’re going to be fine,” I said. “And it wasn’t your fault, okay?”
He nodded. We walked into the school, hand in hand. Some of the students were giving us strange looks. Mike and the others were waiting for us and they all had smiles on their faces. We noticed that a small group of girls were off to the side and giggling as they watched us.
“See, that wasn’t so hard,” he whispered. I looked around and it looked like most people did not really care. We arrived at my locker. Once I got my stuff, Dean held my hand. I could not help but smile at how open he was being.
“Get a room,” Randy said. “We don’t need to see this disgusting crap.”
He was with Harvey and Greg as usual. The rest of the football team was behind them.
“Let’s get out of here, guys,” Marc said. “We’re gonna be late for class.”
“It’s sad. The new kid’s a fag too,” Harvey said loudly.
