CHAPTER 30:
“Do you still want to go?”
“I don’t know,” I said. “I think I do.”
“You don’t have to, Leb. We could stay in and cuddle all evening,” he said, smoothing out the sheets on my bed.
“You’d like that,” I said, sitting on the bed and kissing him on the lips.
“Yeah, I would, but I know that tone. You want to go to prom.”
“I do, but it still feels wrong to go out and celebrate.”
“Leb, what would he say if he was still here?” Dean asked.
“He’d make me go.” Dean got up from bed.
“We all know that, which is why we also can’t waste our tux rental,” he said. He knocked on the wall that divided my room and Mike’s room. Mike came walking in with two garment bags. He handed one to Dean.
“Your tuxedo is in your closet, Caleb,” he said. “Start getting ready, you two, our prom is in two hours and I leave in one and a half. I’ll meet you guys there. I have to pick Jenny up and you know she lives far from school.”
He left the room and Dean hung up his tuxedo.
“You can take a shower here, if you want,” I said, lying down. “I need to take a nap.”
“But I…”
“You have extra clothes and underwear in my closet, remember?”
“I know, but I won’t get to pick you up and have that prom tradition.” I chuckled.
“There is nothing traditional about us. The prom committee went nuts when we wrote each other as our dates. We’re both guys in the relationship, so you don’t have to always pick me up. I prefer we go there together and no someone picking up someone first.”
“I wasn’t implying that you were the girl, Leb. I have the car,” he said, chuckling.
“Go shower before I change my mind,” I said, closing my eyes.
“Aye-aye, Captain,” he said as he left. “Don’t nap, you better get in the shower as soon as I finish. We’re gonna be late if you sleep.”
“I’ll just keep my eyes closed,” I said. The room was quiet and I heard the shower go on in the bathroom. I opened my eyes and looked to the photo on the side table. “I hope you’re okay with this, Ollie.”
I heard the water turn off. It was my cue to get up. I grabbed my towel and headed for the bathroom. The door was still closed, so I leaned against the wall. It opened a minute later. I was met with a towel-clad Dean.
“Your turn,” he said.
“Great, thank you,” I said as I walked past him. He held my arm and kissed me.
“Hey, hey, no half-naked kissing,” Mike said, opening his door. “I love you both, but no, I can’t see that.”
“Get dressed, Dean,” I said. “Mikey here’s gonna blow an artery if he sees us in just our underwear in the same room.”
