CHAPTER 25:

“He’s messed up, you know that?”

“Yeah, he is Mike,” I said. “You’ve said that a hundred times this week.”

“And he was the one who put you in the hospital,” he said.

“You’ve said that all week too, Mike. Can I get ready for my date?”

We were in my room. I was currently in a towel and trying to figure out was to wear. Dean told me to dress up casually.

“I just can’t wrap my head around it,” he said.

I was quiet, while I observed my clothes.

“Someone’s nervous.”

“I’m not nervous,” I said.

“What’s to be nervous about? He’s your boyfriend. He loves you.”

“I know that. I just don’t know what he’s got planned.”

A half hour later, I was on the front porch. Mike was with me for the a bit until he had to bolt because Jenny called him over. I teased him with how whipped he was as he left. I waited about ten minutes more and I saw Dean’s car pull up to the sidewalk. I jogged over and opened the passenger side door.

“Hey Leb,” he said, leaning over and kissing me on the lips.

“Where are we going?”

“My house first,” he said. “I hope you don’t mind.”

I shook my head. He started the car and drove off. Once we arrived at his house, he led me to the kitchen. I looked around and saw there were piles of cooking ingredients on the kitchen island. I instantly knew it was going to be an interesting day.

“Where are your parents?” I asked.

“They’re out for the day,” he said. “I hope you don’t mind getting a little messy.”

“Are we having a food fight?”

“We’re baking cookies and cupcakes. Lots of them,” he said as he took off the polo shirt he was wearing. He was wearing an A-shirt underneath.

“Why are we going to bake a lot?”

“You’ll find out later.”

“Do you want to change into something else?”

“I didn’t bring an extra shirt,” I said.

“Here,” he said, handing me a white shirt. “You can change into this.”

I went to the nearest bathroom to change. I looked at myself in the mirror. My wounds were almost completely healed and the scaring was not as much as I expected. I slipped the shirt on and walked back to the kitchen. Dean was already wearing an apron. He was leaning on the counter and had another apron in his hands.
