{random children names scream if you don't agree with any lmao and also based on a true story so yeah}
"mommy! i want too," little jenna spoke up and the too sounded more like two. with her two years jenna was able to speak, in fact, she spoke a lot. just her pronounciation wasn't perfect yet.
"no, jenna. you're staying home. i'm sorry," her mom, kayla, decided and turned to her husband, grayson. "let's check this upstairs. i wanna be sure about it."
"okay," grayson returned and looked at the pouting, unpleasing looking jenna. "please, jenna. bailey is going outside with her friends, soon enough you'll be old enough to go out as well, okay?"
jenna just looked at him with furrowed eyebrows and turned her back to him.
"she'll get over it," kayla whispered to grayson and they made their way upstairs. they assumed jenna would just get tired and fall asleep, that's what she tended to do when she was mad.
but when both of the parents came back downstairs, little jenna was nowhere to be seen.
"jenna?" kayla looked in every corner, at every possible spot jenna could be. "grayson! jenna is gone!"
"what?" he was at her side in a matter of seconds. "how.. what.. where-"
"i don't know, gray! where are you, jenna?"
soon both were rushing through the whole house, searching for their youngest daughter. she couldn't have been gone, they both knew it. but she was untraceable.
"i can't believe this," kayla cried out and was pulled into grayson's chest. "this is all my fault. our daughter's gone. our two year old kid!"
"no, kayla. calm down. we'll find her." grayson tried to comfort kayla when he was in the biggest turmoil himself.
"and if we don't? oh my god," kayla was near to break down. she sat down and held her head in her hands. every nerve in her body was shaking.
"it's not your fault, baby," grayson tried again and kneeled down in front of her. "let's call the police, yeah? they'll find her for sure."
kayla let out a few more tears and finally nodded. grayson nodded as well and went to grab the telephone. half an hour full of nervous up-and-down-walking and more searching three patrol cars arrived.
the police asked kayla and grayson everything they needed to know and started searching as well. four officers went to search outside, two stayed in the house.
"tell me please, where was your daughter when you saw her last?" one officer asked and held the pen between his fingers.
"here, in the living room. she was on the couch and we assumed she would fall asleep, b-but when we came back down, she w-was gone," kayla explained under tears. grayson nodded throughout the time and gently rubbed her arms.
"was the front door locked?" his thick fingers scrawled notes unto his paper.
"yes," grayson answered this time and followed the motions of the officer's fingers.
"well. we'll look for your daughter and find her soon. she can't be far away. when children are lost, they're most often found in their own house again." he looked into both worried pair of eyes, nodded, and went to search himself. grayson took kayla into a hug.
"see? she'll be back sooner than you expect." he ran his hand down her spine and held her tight. kayla, and grayson, felt a bit better by the officer's words and by the comfort of each other.
while two policemen were in their garden, one was searching upstairs. he went into what seemed like the room of the little girl and studied everything closely. he couldn't find any clue about her disappearing and turned back to the door when he stopped in his tracks.
confused he walked to the closet by the door and stared at the arm hanging out of the closet doors. he was sure that the arm wasn't there before.
slowly, he opened the closet door and more of the arm rolled out. with wide eyes he crouched down and saw a little girl laying on top of the clean beddings that were stored in the closet.
the officer took his walkie-talkie and spoke into it. "i found the girl. i repeat: i found the girl here in the house!"
soon enough kayla, grayson, and the main officer that asked all the questions were in jenna's room. all of them gazed at the asleep girl in her own closet.
having jenna in his hands grayson apologized for the tenth time. "i'm so sorry. we would never guess her sleeping in her closet."
kayla nodded. "yes. we're really sorry. that won't happen again."
"it's fine," the officer told them, "we get this a lot. you were worried. i'm just glad she's in no trouble."
he showed the parents with their child a last smile before getting into the car where his colleague waited for him. all patrol cars were gone and both parents turned to jenna.
"i sorry," jenna apologized and snuggled into her father's chest. "jenna really sorry."
grayson sighed. "we know, baby. what were you thinking? mommy and daddy were scared and worried about you," he held jenna's gaze and waited for an explanation.
"i was mad. i'm sorry. not happen again," she said and a tear escaped her eye.
"no worries now. it's okay, jenna. just never hide from us again," kayla said and took jenna into her arms. grayson hugged both of them and everyone was smiling.
then they heard the door fall back into place and the voice of her oldest daughter, bailey, "i'm home!"
and bailey wasn't ready for the story her parents had to tell.
