I paced around the room, the surroundings blurring together. "What are we going to do, Dimitri? They'll treat her like a lab rat." I continued pacing, pulling on my hair. Dimitri was sitting at the small table in the kitchen, looking at something on his laptop. "Dimitri!" He looked up, face hard. "What the hell are you even doing on that computer?"
"I'm looking at the articles they're reporting. So far, they have no clue about Brianna. Just you. That you're back from the dead, I mean. Princess Vasilisa is telling the reporters that you're back for work."
"What?" I squeaked. "No. No, no, no. I am not coming back to be a guardian. They'll find out about Brianna. If she's not safe here, I'm not coming back to work." I had contemplated giving up my Guardian title for months, but I knew Brianna was more important. I would not put her in danger for something I wanted. But, now, there is no hiding her. I closed my eyes shut, taking a deep breath. I sat down next to Dimitri, scooting my chair closer to his. I took a deep breath before breaking the news to Dimitri. The news that may lead to him hating me. Instead, I stalled. "Dimitri, do you trust me?"
He gave me a confused look, his eyebrows squishing together. "Of course."
"I know what I need to do to save Brianna from being treated like a lab rat..."
Dimitri was standing against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest. I stood across from him, kneeling down to Brianna's level. She was so excited, even though she didn't understand what our plan meant for her relationship with Dimitri. I gave her a small smile, lightly squeezing the sides of her arms.
There was a knock on the door, and I knew it was show time. I took what had to be the hundredth deep breath I've taken today. I stood up, opening the door slightly. He was standing there, green eyes piercing mine. Reporters caught a glimpse of my face and started snapping pictures. He shoved one of the reporter's camera into his face, telling him to leave me alone. I pulled him inside, wrapping my arms around him.
Brianna charged down the hall, running and jumping into his arms. "Adrian!" she squealed as he gathered into his arms and gave her a bear hug. "I missed you sooo much!" she screamed. her voice muffled by his shoulder.
I laughed, which seemed to anger Dimitri even more. "We need to talk about the plan," I told Adrian seriously. "Come on, let's sit." We all walked into the kitchen, sitting down at the table. "Adrian, you're going to walk out and tell them you and I are making an announcement, then I'll walk out with Brianna. Remember that you funded my and Brianna's getaway and kept us hidden."
"So... the truth," he said, smiling.
I couldn't help but return the gesture. "Yes. Except the part where Brianna is the daughter of two dhampirs. Are we ready?" I asked, looking at both men.
Dimitri gave a slight nod in contrast to Adrian's eager one. Dimitri and I stood behind the front door while Adrian went out to give his speech to the reporters. "Dimitri, please talk to me."
"Roza, I don't like this, but I'm doing it for Brianna. Although, I'm sure you're talking about the fact you let Adrian be more of a father figure than her own father."
"Dimitri," I said in a warning tone, "I needed to get away from here. He helped me do that. If it weren't for him, your daughter would be exposed to all this. Did you really think I wasn't going to let him see her?"
He shook his head angrily, turning his face away from me. Brianna came running down the hall, smiling, jumping up and down. "It's time, Momma!" I smiled and grabbed her hand. "When are we going to tell them about my real daddy?"
A sad smile made its way to my face. "I don't know, Brianna."
Brianna and I walked out the door, hand in hand. Cameras were flashing like crazy. "The reason I hid Rose away is because..." he paused, looking at Brianna, "... because Rose and I had a child."
The mob of reporters went into a frenzy.
The next couple of weeks were insane. I ended up enrolling Brianna in the school at Court, and took the position Lissa had offered. Every secret we had, even ones that weren't true, were exposed to the public. Every Moroi and dhampir in the world knew about my and Christian's teaching jobs, as well as how much I made from the house Adrian and I sold once I decided I was going to live at Court. Worst of all, Dimitri learned that Adrian and I are dating. I knew he would figure it out eventually, now that I was with Adrian all the time. I should've have told him the complete truth about Adrian and me, but I couldn't. Despite the fact that I truly do love Adrian, Dimitri brought back some feelings I wish I could push away. But as always, I can't. Dimitri... I will always love him. And until I figure out what's best, I can't break up with Adrian.
I've gotten used to a routine I never thought I would have again. Every morning, I get up at four and put on my guardian attire. I'm at Lissa's by five and become invisible, making sure she is safe. It felt good to be like this, to be what I've wanted to be for so long now. The only downside is Dimitri. With Christian back, Dimitri is assigned to him. Most of the time, he and I are in the same room, and he makes sure not to look my way. He intentionally averts his gaze and stands as far away from me as possible. The only time I talk to him is when he's picking up Brianna for a play date. And it really pisses me off. At the end of the day, I go to Adrian's and have dinner with him and my daughter, like a real family would. And every night, I fall asleep in Adrian's arms. To say I wasn't happy would be a lie. I am happy, just a piece of me wants Dimitri.
