Brianna pulled out of the hug, claiming she was hungry. Again. I smiled at her, wiping the tears from my face. She mimicked me, afraid that she was crying. She hated crying in front of anyone, especially the ones she cared about. I nodded towards the door and she scurried out of the room. One of Dimitri's arms were still around my waist, and I pulled away from him. I got up and walked over to the nightstand where my bag was, and handed him a photo album. He looked confused until he opened it. Every single memory, every single event that happened in Brianna's life was in that photo album. His confused expression became full of joy, and a single tear fell down his cheek. I sat down next to him, laughing and explaining the pictures to him.
Half way through the photo album, he found the hidden pictures. His smile fell as he understood why they were hidden. I didn't want Brianna to know anything about her father, including his appearance. I didn't want her to know how in love I was with him. I didn't want her to know that if I didn't have her, I would probably be dead. Dimitri spread the photos out on the floor, smiling at every single one of them. They were all of me and him. He picked up my favorite one, and I felt more tears trailing down my face. Oh God, what have I become?
He faced the picture toward me with a questioning look. It was the photo of the trip we took after Mason's death. The picture I had stole from his house when I was pregnant with Brianna. "Did you take this from my house?" He asked.
I looked down. "Maybe."
He scooted closer to me, still going through every single picture in the album. He went back to the pictures of Brianna, smiling. He held up a picture of Brianna in her fairy costume from last Halloween. "She's beautfiul," he whispered. "Just like her mom."
I rolled my eyes, but still felt my pulse race. "She is beautiful. Once I allowed my mom back into my life," I paused to shake my head at his questioning glare, "she forgot about the fact that I was a teenage mom. She forgot that I gave up on my guardian duties. It was like Brianna had complete control over her." I laughed, remembering the time Brianna had asked for a cookie, and mom ran right to the store and bought a dozen. "Actually, Brianna has everyone wrapped around her finger. The last time she saw Olena-" I paused and mentally kicked myself.
"Olena? When did Brianna see my mother?!" He was furious.
"Dimitri, calm down. She wanted to tell you, but I told her I couldn't risk it. She promised to keep Brianna a secret. Please don't be mad."
The anger dissapeared from his face, and he became calm. Well, as calm as one can be when on the edge of hysterics. "Why? Why would you hide my own daughter from me?"
"I thought it was for the best. I'm sorry. If it makes you feel better, none of the Moroi world knows about Brianna. She's my little secret. Everyone just thinks I dropped off the end of the earth."
Brianna came bouncing into the room, a big smile shining on her face. She took a seat in Dimitri's lap, and I smiled. She handed me a piece of bacon, and I gladly accepted it. She saw that the photo album was out, and began showing Dimitri every single one. Even though he'd already seen them, he didn't tell Brianna. He laughed and smiled and told her she was beautiful. I felt my heart melting. I then scolded myself for it, because I still wasn't sure if Dimitri staying in her life was a good idea.
She pointed to a picture of when Lissa and I took her to Disneyland. "I was scared to take this picture," she told Dimitri. "Donald was nice for once, though. He held my hand and everything!"
We spent an hour with Brianna, who decided she would explain every single picture to him. She said that she wanted to make sure he knew what he missed. I automatically felt a tug at my heart, knowing it was my fault she felt the need to do that. When we reached the end of the album, Brianna was tired and fell asleep in Dimitri's arms. I took the photo album off her lap and put it back in my bag. As I went into my bag, I noticed my phone glowing. "Five missed calls" was written on the screen, all from the school. Damn it.
"I have to call Christian. The school's been calling me," I told Dimitri, bringing him out of his trance.
"Okay. I'm just going to put her in the bed. It's probably more comfortable than my arms."
I nodded, and began to step outside. Dimitri was in front of me in a flash, holding the door closed. I stepped back, shocked. I forgot how fast he was. I raised my eyebrows. "Problem?" I asked.
"Yes. There are reporters out there."
I felt my eyes widen. "Reporters? Why are they-- Oh my god. No." I stumbled back as the realization hit me.
They were here for my daughter.
