Pressure was on me, squashing my lungs. My eyes flew open as I let out a quick puff of air from the impact. I sat up, smiling at the sight before me. Brianna was all dressed up in a cute little red dress and black kiddie heels. Her hair was in two braids and swayed as she jumped on the bed. Adrian was dressed up as well in a light green, button down dress shirt and khakis. I stretched my arms and legs, letting out a small yawn.
"What's the occasion?" I asked, eyeing Adrian up and down.
Brianna stopped jumping, her mouth forming an o. She knelt down beside me, pressing the back of her hand to my forehead. "Momma, are you okay?" I laughed and nodded. "How could you forget today's your birthday?! Come on, Momma, get dressed." She picked up my arm and started pulling me. I played along, acting as if she was strong enough to drag me, which caused her to smile. She led me to the closet, opening up the cream colored doors with a grand gesture, sweeping her arms outwards. She tugged on a red dress, and I brought it down for her to inspect it. "We could match, Momma!" she squealed. I nodded and laughed.
She pranced out of the room to look for shoes. I watched after her, wondering if she would still be this girly in her teenage years. Just thinking about her growing up was depressing, and I urged the thoughts away. Especially since Adrian was walking up to me.
"Do you need help putting that on, Ms. Hathaway?" he joked, resting his hands on my hips.
I got up on my toes, getting my lips close to his. "You wish," I teased, then pulled away. "Okay, now tell me where we're going." I put my hands on my hips, giving him an expectant look.
"Why do you want to take the fun out of everything today?" I rolled my eyes and playfully shoved him.
Brianna came bouncing into the room, my favorite black heels in hand. She put one shoe in each hand, trying to reach me. I laughed and knelt down, taking the shoes from her and pressing a kiss to her forehead. Brianna shooed Adrian out of the room, telling him the girls had to get ready. I led her to the bathroom where I changed into the dress and heels, which looked amazing on me. I admired myself in the mirror as much as I admired the dress. It was pretty short, unlike Brianna's (it went down to her knees and isn't as tight as mine) and my long sleeves were made of lace while Brianna's dress was a simple red dress with long sleeves. My heels were platform and Brianna's were flat and strappy.
"Wow, we look hot," Brianna said. I laughed and she gave me the biggest smile. "Momma, can I wear makeup?"
I gave her a pained look. She gave me puppy dog eyes. "Ugh. Fine, you little stinker. But no concealer or anything. Just eye shadow and lip gloss. Okay?"
She clapped her hands together, beaming. She skipped over to the bathroom sink, where all my makeup is, and grabbed a small tube of pink lip gloss. I smiled, plucked it out of her fingers, then squirted a small dot of it on her finger. I showed her what to do by applying lip gloss to my lips. She copied me then smacked her lips together. I tilted my head to the side, eyeing the color. I shook my head and grabbed a darker pink lipstick and began applying it to her lips. She wouldn't stay still, so I gave her my makeup brush to play with. She smiled, pretending to brush blush onto my cheeks. I smiled back at her, burning this image of her into my brain.
I heard a click noise. "That was a beautiful picture," Adrian said, standing in the doorway, holding his iPhone up. He walked over to us, showing us the picture.
"Look at how pretty you are, Brianna. My gosh. Send that to my phone, babe. I want that to be my new lock screen."
After Adrian left the bathroom, I grabbed my eye shadow palette, and applied a neutral color to her eyelids. She looked at herself in the mirror, squealing. She ran off to show Adrian how pretty she looked, and I stayed to apply my makeup. I started to apply concealer under my eyes when Adrian came up behind me and pushed my hand down. I looked up at his reflection, a questioning look in my eyes.
