Chapter 5:

Later that night I sat curled up on my bed, doing homework. My window was open and the cool spring breeze filled my room.

I was distracted by the vibration of my phone. I read the text on the bright screen.

•Amarys HAS to win Spring Queen. Someone needs to dethrone Summer and its gonna be her. Plus everyone's treating us different now. It's like we're actually well known around school.

•Seriously! The jocks were actually talking to me!

•We need to help Amarys gain popularity. She needs a boyfriend. A popular one. Hmmmm....... Mike Palmer! Totally!
-Claire

•I don't know...... What if Mike finds out we're setting them up?

•It'll be fine! Promise! And just think of how much popularity Amarys is gonna get us!

I stared at my phone. Claire has always been my best friend but this year it seemed like all she cared about was boys, clothes, and popularity. I mean I still like hanging out with her, usually. But this seemed like kind of taking advantage of Amarys. But Claire was right about it stopping Summer from running our school. So it wasn't a bad thing right? I texted her back:

Gotta go, studying.

•Kk see ya tomorrow!
-Claire

I stared at my phone for a long time, different thoughts floating around in my mind. It isn't bad. It's good. It will benefit the school and even Amarys. I've got to get through.

========================

The next morning, I walked to school early. At first I'd planned on just hanging out in the library, but that didn't end up happening, given the fact that I'd slammed into Trevor Jones.

We both fell to the floor in a messy heap. I saw him rub his forehead. Seriously! Two mornings in a row! At least it wasn't a mailbox.

Trevor stood up and reached his hand out to me. He flashed a smile at me and said, "Sorry, my fault. I should really watch where I'm going. Are you okay?"

I took his hand and stood up, getting lost in his big blue eyes. Then I snapped back to reality and began to blush. "No, I'm a klutz, but really I'm fine," I said embarrassed, trying to hide my red scratched up knees.

He, unfortunately, saw them and with a concerned look said, "No you're not. Come on, I'll walk you to the nurse."

I sighed and reluctantly agreed. It was a really awkward walk. He tried to make conversation and I kind of sort of participated in them, but it was mostly just silence.

I watched him run his fingers through his dark brown hair, and couldn't help getting a fluttery feeling. Never in my life had a boy walked me anywhere, with the exception of maybe Anthony, who was more like a brother then anything else, but as I stood here walking by Trevor, I felt different. Calmer. More, at peace.

When we entered Nurse Miranda's office she gave me a knowing look. Ever since I've been able to walk, I've been a human disaster, so throughout my high school years, we've become pretty close. "Scraped knees," I told her.

Before I could explain myself any further, Trevor blurted out, "I wasn't looking where I was going, we collided, little accident." I looked at him, surprised. That wasn't what happened at all but, ok then.

Nurse Miranda handed me some bandaids and some disinfectant wipes. I cleaned myself up and thanked her.

Trevor was waiting for me when I headed out.

"You know, you didn't have to wait for me," I said.

"I know," he said grinning, "but I wanted to."

I raised my eyebrows, careful not to look at his adorable dimples. Didn't want to show weakness.

"So, um... who's your home room teacher?" he asked.

"Mr. Messenger," I groaned. Everyone in the school knows he's one of the toughest teachers there.

"Rough," he said, however still smiling.

"What's the deal with you and smiling so much?" I asked.

"I like to be positive," he said happily, "You should try it sometimes."

I rolled my eyes at him, a small smile creeping out. Just then the bell rang and we began to part. However just before I left, he touched my arm and said, "By the way, you have a great smile."
