Paladin Danse knew as soon as he left the elevator, as soon as he heard the thundering of the vertibird, he wouldn't leave the bunker alive. But he was fine with that.
He smiled as he recalled her stumbling into Cambridge, and remembered the girl who broke into a panic thinking of her past. She was too damaged to walk into bed that night. He had to hold her as she fell asleep, shaking and sweating. And now, she was the woman holding Elder Arthur Maxson at gunpoint, telling him to shut up and listen to her.
In a way, he had saved her. Helped her, at the least. And, as long as he knew she would move on, he could die knowing that.
But now, she had turned the gun on herself. And he knew he had to save her one more time. Paladin Danse was raised a soldier, and was always taught to save yourself, no matter how hopeless.
She was more important than a fruitless effort of self-preservation.
He turned his gun on her.
When he heard the first gunshot, all he could focus on was pulling the trigger fast enough.
