I saw blue eyes looking back at me and her newly strawberry blonde hair danced behind her face. I didn't have time to study her features or question her because two black vans pulled up in front of the pile of rubble which was once a shoe store.
A bunch of men and women walked out if the van and started shooting everywhere, trying to kill us. I was so confused that I didn't even know what to do. I stood there frozen until, who I assume was Jessie, pulled me behind a big piece of metal which was once the counter.
She was breathing heavy and sweat covered her face, making her glisten. The man who accompanied her joined us.
I looked at her and she tried to hide her face.
"Jess-"
"No," she stopped me before I could even start.
I didn't even know how to feel. She was alive. But I saw her body...well what was left of it. She died in a fire. I went to her funeral. This can't be real. My hand went up to touch her face and she pulled out a knife and cut my hand.
I hissed in pain and pulled it back. I looked at her in shock. This can't be Jessie. She wouldn't hurt a fly.
"Don't touch me. Stay here."
She got up from next to me and I stood up a little so I could see her. A guy lunged at her and she dodged him by doing an aerial. I stared in awe as she fought off every guy that came toward her.
I heard a gunshot and she screamed out, "Fuck!"
She had her hand on the other and she kicked the guy in his stomach hard. Her heel pierced his stomach and he coughed up blood. I gagged and sat back down on the floor not wanting to see this violence anymore.
My protection was flung away and I screamed and it came out high pitched before I cleared my throat and screamed deeper.
The man laughed at me before placing his gun on my forehead. He fell to the ground and blood poured from his head. I looked away and took in sharp intake of breath trying to calm myself.
I just wanted to sell shoes.
"You can come out now," I heard the man say.
I stood up and my jaw dropped at the sight in front of me. The place was covered in blood and dead bodies.
Jessie was about to walk out of the building like if she never even saw me.
She stopped when I heard the man say, "Faith, we can't just leave him here."
Who the hell is Faith? So I have the wrong person. I could have sworn that was Jessie.
"Why not?" She snapped at him.
"Because he saw what just happened here and that makes him a target for the druggies goons."
She let out a deep breath and folded her arms, "So?"
He walked over to her and wrapped his arms around her waist. He leaned down to kiss her but she pulled away and looked at me. He cleared his throat as she walked closer to me.
She pulled a gun and pointed it at me. My eyes widened and when the gun fired I waited to fall. But when I opened my eyes, it was met with her cold ones.
"I only saw him when I was going to kill you. But that was my last bullet so lucky you."
I smiled nervously at her, "You're not Jessie?"
"Oh God," I heard the man whisper under his breath. He cleared his throats and said, "We should get going."
She looked me over one last time before walking away from me. I couldn't help it when my eyes lingered in her perfectly sculpted ass.
He nodded his head in her direction, indicating that we should leave. I nodded and followed after him.
The car ride was quiet and very much awkward.
I entered a big house and the girl stopped me from walking any further as her boyfriend walked forward.
She avoided my eyes and she bit her lip before saying, "I am Jessie."
My jaw dropped and she waved her hands frantically, "I'll tell you everything later but..."
she let out a breath before whispering, "how's Andrew? Does he miss me? Does he talk about me? Is he still single?"I looked away from her and my eyes started to water. I always wanted to forget about what happened.
"Jessie-"
"It's Faith."
I ignored her and continued, "When Andrew went to the hospital for attempted suicide, Hailey went to the juvenile detention facility. But that's not important." I sucked in a breath before saying, "He ran away from the hospital...Andrew's been missing for a year and nine months."
Her eyes watered and she seemed to choke, "What?"
"He said he'd find you...he was so committed. But they never found him. They pronounced him dead."
"No...no you're lying!" She pushed me away and I pulled her in for a hug.
She cried into my chest and I heard someone coming down the stairs. Another boy around our age, with long hair, came downstairs but when he saw us he just turned around and went back up.
"He can't be gone."
