Chapter 3: Family?

I may be completely naive but I am beginning to think that they don't mean me any harm. I thought as I was given a place near the fire to sleep. I woke up a cold sweat that blanketed my body. Shivers ran down my arms and legs. Darkness nothing but an impending dread that covered my mind in a fog. I heard a voice seeping forth from the shadows. Called to me and mocked me from the beyond. I tried to run but my legs wouldn't respond. I gasped it was dark outside. I had to get out of here. What was that? It must be Him! Did I wake up from (Inception no? ok) two dreams? These people whether they are good or not will come to hate me soon enough. I began loosening my ropes. Finally, after what seemed like ages the ropes loosened enough for me to get my wrists free. I rubbed my aching muscles and began to sneak away. Until a voice called to me from the fire pit.

Vio: "It's too late for a young girl to go for a walk at night. I assume you are still running from whoever is chasing you right?"

I froze not knowing what to do or how to respond. Would he beat me for trying to run?

Vio: I walked over to her slowly and noticed her trembling. 

I shook in fear.

Vio: "Come here," I said as grabbing her arm and leading her to the fire before I sat down next to her. "No one will hurt you here, besides whoever comes after you will have to get through us first. You saw how well Green and Blue fought."

I nodded and rubbed my head where Blue had hit me.

Vio: "Will you show us to the town tomorrow? I swear that no harm will come to you under my care."

I felt very unsure and I guessed he could read me like a book because what he said next surprised me.

Vio: "It must be hard to trust us."

I looked shocked at him.

Vio: I smiled at the look on her face. "You have been through a lot. To be honest I doubt I would ever trust anyone again after what you have been through. Never having people around me who cared like Red, or someone as trustworthy as Green, and as steadfast as Blue. Besides Red wouldn't stop talking about how excited he is about buying things with you in town. Then I leaned down and whispered, He wants to get you a new pair of shoes."

I looked down at my bruised feet and tattered dress. I had never had shoes before. What was it that Red had done when he was happy and grateful? He did that hug thing, right?

Vio: I was quite sure Opal would agree with what I had said. After all, she needed someone to look after her. Maybe someone in town would take her in? I then in surprise felt her hug me I looked down at her smiling face. She looked so cute. I began to blush a little and she extracted her hug looking confused. Realizing she thought I didn't like it I said, "Red is going to love that you said yes and so will everyone else. I am going to take care of you and so will everyone else." I pat her head as she stared up at me. "At least until we can find someone else who can," I said under my breath.

I looked down not knowing what to say. I wrote 'Thank you,' in the dirt and he smiled at me in return. He then went back to reading and I looked over his shoulder ever so slightly so not to seem a bother. I then began reading his book too. It was a very wonderful story about a magical land I had never heard of and about a magical beast I had only heard of in a bar. Dragons, oh how I wish I could meet one.

Vio: I glanced over at her and saw that she was reading too. She noticed I was watching her and she pulled back from me looking at the ground. "You can read!?" She nodded and wrote. 'I love reading but I am not very good. I taught myself to because I didn't want to be stupid like everyone said I was.' I smiled and said, "You may read as much as you wish. It is wonderful that someone else enjoys it so much! Anyone who can read better than Blue is intelligent."

Unknown: All of the hate!!! Boom drop the mike! *Puts sunglasses on and stands in a hip pose.*

Blue: What!

Vio: It wasn't my idea to say it that way. Unknown added it in later.

Unknown: You bet I did! No regrets!

Vio: Will you two grow up!? He yelled as Blue chased me around the desk. Blue then bumps into Green sending them both to the floor.

Green: Ouch watch it!

I trip over Green and land on my butt, giving Blue enough time to try and tackle me. I grab his arms and try to pin him but we are stuck in a match of strength.

Green: *Starts yelling at Blue and Unknown.*

Vio: *Facepalms*

Red: Back to the story!!!

I yawned and Vio ushered me towards my bed as I quickly fell asleep. I was awoken very abruptly by a shout of enjoyment.

Red: "Yeah today we are going to stop being lost!" He said that as he jumped up right next to me.

My dagger flung to my hand in fear and surprise.

Red: "Oh!" I felt tears begin to well up and my voice quivered. "I'm  sorry Opal I didn't mean to scare you!"

Blue: "Where did you find that? Give it here!"

I lept out of bed quickly,  looking confused. The events of yesterday came rushing back and I lowered my dagger.

Green: "Watch it Blue she might beat you again." I called playfully over to the three.

Blue: "What did you say?!" I stomped over to Green and we began arguing. 

I stood even more confused than before as Vio walked over to me placing a hand on my shoulder.

Vio: "Don't worry this is a common occurrence."

I nodded and sheathed my dagger.

Vio: "Where did you find the dagger anyway. I was quite sure that I watched you most of the night."

I grabbed his hand and began writing on it. I hadn't noticed that it made him blush when I did so. I wrote: 'After he had taken me back to my bed I noticed my dagger a short ways off laying on a stump next to some supplies. While you had your back turned into the fire I retrieved it.' He looked at me with amazement.

Vio: "You must have been extremely quiet for me not to have noticed you."

Green and Blue finally stopped bickering and the brothers gathered the supplies as I more or less watched.

Blue insisted on my hands being bound so that I wouldn't run away but Red and Vio told him that I could be trusted. I pleaded silently that he would agree. He agreed but only if I remained in the middle of the of him and Green. I nodded and began walking the direction of the town as Red ran up next to me to talk.

Red: "So umm," he said looking a little nervous and you wondered why. "I have always wondered what it would be like to have a sister. And since you are going to be with us for a while... Will you be my sister!!?"

Tears jumped to my eyes did he really want me to be his sister? I stopped dead in my tracks as tears began streaming down my face. The others stopped to see my reaction to what Red had said. I grabbed a stick from a nearby tree and wrote: 'Why would you want me. I am torn and divided from my-' I paused my breath catching in my throat before writing, 'my Master.'

Red: I felt sadness lump in my throat. "Well, you don't look broken to me. And even if you are I promise to help patch you up OK?" I looked at her confidently and smiled kindly. 

I ran over to him sobbing.

Blue: I rolled my eyes, "You sure cry a lot."

Green: I elbowed him and walked over to me, "I think it's time we get our family to the market.

I nodded and looked at what I hoped would be my new family. Little did I know the dangers that lay ahead.
