CHAPTER 3: NEW SCHOOL
Monday, August 23, 2014
Dear Diary,
As I walked up to MacArthur High School, I surveyed my new classmates. I don’t know what I expected, but this wasn’t it. People were…laughing. They were happy to be here. I guess I just associated this place with misery and couldn’t bare the thought that somebody liked it here. Apparently, people did.
As I approached the dark blue doors, I saw my mystery man. Not shockingly, he was surrounded by girls. I mean he was definitely attractive. He had such dark blue eyes and jet black hair… Shut up Carter. You have a boyfriend! The best boyfriend in the world, might I add.
I rolled my eyes and opened the door. Inside, students sat on the ground chatting with their friends. I was supposed to go to locker 561, wherever the hell that was.
“Hey!” someone said.
As I turned around, a red-headed girl in a green skirt and white blouse greeted me with a smile. She was quite pretty. Her blue eyes, freckles, and impeccable fashion taste made me feel self-conscious.
“Um hi,” I said meekly.
“What’s your name?”
“I’m Carter. You?”
“I’m Lindsey. I’m in charge of befriending new students.”
“Oh, you really don’t have to… I uh… you don’t have to be my friend if you don’t want to.”
Why was I being so weird? Something about her made me on edge and not at all comfortable.
“Oh, no I do! You’ll fit in really well here… except well… oh never mind.”
“No, what is it? I’ve never really been a new student before, well, obviously” I chuckled.
“Um, well here at the MacArthur School, people don’t really show up in booty shorts.”
“Booty shorts? What are you talking about? These are normal shorts.”
“Yeah, um, we’ll talk fashion after we find your locker, hm?”
“Sounds like a plan” I said as she and I walked upstairs.
As I unlocked my locker, people kept staring and whispering about me.
“Um, Lindsey?”
“Yeah?”
“Is there something on my butt or something? People keep staring at me…”
“Uh its cause your new here, but it could also be your butt. If you haven’t noticed, it’s a really cute butt.”
“Lindsey!”
“What? Oh, sorry. I’m very open. I kinda don’t have a filter in the old noggin.”
“We’ll get along just fine,” I said, closing the locker shut.
“Oh hey, there’s Roger. I got to go… kind of got my eye on that fine piece of… Hey Roger!” and just like that she was gone.
Great, so now I have to find the Chemistry lab on my own. Why the hell was this school so big when there were supposed to be 100 people per grade? This was supposed to be the most selective, highest level public school in New York. Maybe I wouldn’t have to fake stupidity anymore.
As I was mesmerized in thought, I bumped into the one person I really didn’t want to see.
“Watch it. Oh hey! Woah, you kinda look hot when you’re not crying and running, haha” he said, while a smile spread across his face.
“Ha ha, very funny” I said sarcastically.
As I tried to push past him, he said, “No way. You’re not getting past me this time. Just say the password and you can go through.”
“What’s the password?”
“Your name, green eyes.”
“Not happening.”
“Oh come on. Nothing happens in this school without my authority. I could basically have you kicked out right now if I said you weren’t acceptable.”
“Oh yeah? Who do you think you are?”
“I’m Blane McDonagh. Who are you?”
“I’m late for class. Shit, on my first day too” I said worriedly trying to push past his muscular body.
“Nice to meet you, Late for Class, but there are no cussing in these hallways. I’m afraid I’m going to have to take you to detention.”
“I’ll be in there for real if you don’t move!”
“All you need to say are two little words. Come on!”
As the bell rang, I knew he was the only way I could even find the class.
“If I tell you my name, will you please show me where the Chem lab is?”
“As a matter of fact, I’m going there now! What are the odds… first period and we’re already in the same class. I think its fate, beautiful.”
“My name is Carter. You get a last name when you take me to class.”
“Alrighty then, Carter. Allons-y!”
As we walked through the hallway, I couldn’t help but stare at him. His hair was so jet black and shiny that I could almost see my reflection in it. His arms were so defined that I could almost picture him weight lifting at the gym for hours each day. His style was so put together yet effortless that I could see why all the girls fawned over him. Oh my god, I was fawning over him. Stop, Carter.
“You like what you see?”
“What?” I said waking up from my daze.
“Never mind, haha. We’re here.”
Chemistry Lab: Room 435. Great, I’m so excited.
As we walked in, the teacher said, “Look who decided to show up to class today! Mr. McDonagh… with a new lady? Mr. McDonagh who’s your friend?” the teacher asked.
“This lovely lady is new at MacArthur. Her name is Carter… Carter what’s your last name, again?”
As I studied the staring faces looking at me with envy, I suddenly became very frightened. I hated crowds. This was definitely no exception. Suddenly, I was very self-conscious about my “booty shorts” and white t-shirt. Were my converses too Florida? Was I not stylish enough for this school?
“Um. Rosenthal.”
“See, Dr. White? She’s probably on that list of attendance of yours.”
“She just so happens to be. Now, that name can be tainted with the word late next to it.”
“Oh, Dr. White! It’s her first day! She wouldn’t have even been able to find this classroom if it wasn’t for me. Give her a break, will ya!”
“Blane… it’s okay. Stop. ” I whispered. “It won’t happen again, Dr. White” I whispered, while I sat down in the back of the room.
Of course it wouldn’t happen again. I had already memorized the path while I was staring at Blane.
